carsdotcom reported this morning that Honda is killing off the Fit and Civic Coupe for MY2021. Also the manual Accord will be no more in any trim.
Gotta pour one or three out for this one. The Fit is the best car in that segment but I'm sure Civic hatch pulled a ton of sales away from it.
C&D confirming as well. I'm sad, but I'm not surprised.
The new Fit the rest of the world is getting is being hailed as a return to form, shame we'll never see it here.

The global economy is going in the E36M3er and every manufacturer is pulling their small, efficient vehicle offerings from the US market.

Seriously, these may be cars we all want to buy for $2500 in 10 years, but that's not how automakers pay the bills.

Mazda had 7 different models they sold in 2019. For the sake of simplifying things lets divide 278k/7 = 39714. The Fit was on par with most Mazda model sales by average.
In terms of Honda sales figures, yea the Fit is struggling. If it were a Mazda it would be doing well.

Well, yes. Of course they wouldn't be getting rid of them if they were selling well. That doesn't mean we can't mourn the loss of enthusiast-friendly vehicles.

Well, sorta. Mazda has a fair spread in their sales volumes. They have their halo car which sells in very low numbers, and they have the ones that are the bread and butter and keep the company in business. The halo car gets supported because it's important to the brand. If the bread and butter cars fail to sell well enough, they get cut. The Mazda3 sold about 51k in 2019.
You're also counting the convertible and targa versions of the Miata as two different models :)

Hey dude I'm only relaying reporting from official Mazda sales figures, in which they list 7 different models. Are you gonna tell me they are a boutique brand next?

This all seems a bit odd except the Accord m/t.
No Fit - I guess it makes sense since they don't sell much. I know enthusiasts love them but as a big guy nope. Feels like cramped e36 m3 box to me.
Accord m/t - that makes total sense. If you are buying a sedan you pretty much don't care if it is a penalty box. Too bad as the Accord Sport was fun to drive!
Civic coupe - that's a head scratcher. They are the only good-looking Civics and they sell them to younger folks who associate Honda with performance vehicles. My second car was an Integra and I've had a zillion Hondas since. You lose that demographic.
Civic Si - also a head scratcher; this car was a performance bargain. Same logic as the Civic coupe - it's a gateway drug of a car.
This and the CTR getting heavy/expensive/electrified/no more m/t is baaaad news from Honda.

I'm not sure what boutique brand really means, but I Mazda and I disagree on the Miata soft top and Miata RF being different cars :) The rest of my point stands regardless of how you feel about that distinction. If the Mazda3 sold as poorly as the Fit, Mazda would be concerned. If the CX5 sold as poorly as the Fit, Mazda would be in big trouble.
I’m a little bummed out by the news, but I haven’t exactly bought any of these cars either.

that bummes me out, too. I had already realized that my next car isn't going to be a Ford, but it would be sad if I could not even get a car.
Its like Honda hit the Fit with the Ugly Stick and then decided to kill it out of mercy.
I see more of the older, "normal" looking Fits on the road than I do of the newest gen. I was at a dealership back in 2018 when I was car shopping and the salesman worked hard to trash talk the fit. "ugly" and "underpowered" were some of the words he used.
That new Fit in the pic looks pretty decent.

Maybe they figured out that if the economy tanks this time gas prices are actually going down too.
Future me is sad, but like Keith said, car companies can’t care what we want to buy used in 10 years.
I’m not sure where everyone is hiding the 50k 3s Mazda sold in 2019. I rarely see the new body style. Maybe 2019 was still the last gen? The CX-5 on the other hand, I see tons of. I’m pretty sure it’s the only reason Mazda stays afloat in the US market.
I see gardening people using 30 year old small trucks all the time these days, since they don’t really make them anymore. Is that how it’s gonna be for small cars in the future? If you want small, nimble, fuel efficient, we will be scouring the used market for the last of the economy cars circa 2014.
