3 years ago I bought a well maintained 03 accord with 90K miles. Now it is up to 160K having needed nothing more engine wise than oil changes. I do believe the timing(chain?) was done before we bought it. I know I need to do an air filter, and probably the spark plugs. What else should I plan on soon or keep an eye open for?

Why would the timing chain have been done? It is not exactly a pattern failure, which leads me to infer that maintenance was poor/oil was not kept in it dirty or not. But if you've done 70k more with no concerns then that's ancient history.

Maybe check the valve lash if you have the valve cover off for any reason. Hondas in general seem to lose lash over time, and it sometimes causes a burned exhaust valve. Or not, and the engine runs until the rest of the car dies of boredom. Usually the latter. The K-series is a really good engine.

Get a handbook and consult it

In reply to Knurled:

Weren't some of the early K-series motors plagued by a crappy chain tensioner? Could've swore I read that somewhere, might explain the repair.

I've got an 05 with 160k on it now and my girlfriend has a CRV also w/ the K motor (110k). Both going strong though did air filter/O2 sensor (had a code) when I got the accord w/ 140k. The air filter box was a pain to open as I guess the flex hose hardens over time or something. Some people cut out a bit off the fender liner to sneak the top past and not crack anything.

Mine had 178k of abuse on it when the car got totaled by an old man. Nothing more than average care and feeding.

So keep fresh oil and have it live forever, got it.

Yeah, just the usual crap really. If you haven't in awhile, next time your under the car check the axle boots, shocks should be upon you sometime soon as well. If you haven't considered it as well yet, might be time for a turbo.

I love my wife, but I would not trust her with a turbo on her car. Partly why I got her that instead of a Grand Prix coupe with the 3800...

That said, the R18 in my civic could use a JR blower
