I have to make a tire purchase today for my Autox tires for the season.
I already have a set of 20x9.5x13 hoosier cantilever R25B's that still have some tread depth in them, but I'm not sure if they will still be sticky (last years). I have 2 sets of rims, so I will be keeping these and adding a new set of tires. I have narrowed the choices down to:
21x10x13 hoosier R25A's - big and sticky, bad in the cold and wet.
or
225/45/13 toyo R888's. smaller, not as sticky, but good in the cold and wet.
The price on either is within $15 for the whole set. Contingency isn't a factor, but I can't decide if I should get the big sticky ones and hope for dry weather or get the toyos and hope my last years slicks still have some life in them.
Car is a 1650lb miata with a stock 1.6 and konis and ground controls.
Advice?
The weather would really, really have to be bad for the R888's to hold a candle to the Hoosiers on an autocross course, especially for such a lightweight car.
I realize you're in the great white north, but I'd go with the slicks.
what about 255/40/13 A6's? they stay softer at colder temperatures than the R25B's don't they?

Yes they do, but they cost 2x as much.
The cold rainy days would likely be about 50 degrees with some standing water, but not a lake.
I'm leaning towards the hoosiers because I may just show up for the dry events since driving without a windshield or roof in the rain is kind of miserable.

What else did you do to get to 1650#!?

If it doesn't help it go, stop, or turn I got rid of it. There are some pics that are linked through the readers rides.
how about a Kumho V710 in one of their 13" dimensions?

They don't have nearly the dry grip of the hoosiers and are basically slick so I would imagine that they don't work as well as the 888's in the rain. They would also cost more than either option.

I went with the hoosiers. Hopefully it is a dry season.
I was hoping you'd go with the toyos since they suck for solo use.
Also glad to hear you didn't boost yet and stayed outa my class. (actually I'm not going to bother with regionals this year)
usually to my experience, unless you have standing puddles the slicks will be faster anyways.

There was a Tire Rack Tire Tech article a few months ago about what tires are faster in specific conditions. As long as the surface isn't glassy (very wet) the slicks were faster than an intermediate.
Hang on - are you Gary's boy?

I'm actully planning on running in your class all season since I'm planning on adding the SC mid season. I guess I'll have to make the trip up to Barrie then.
Sweet. Say hi to him for me (Greg). He shared some of your build pictures, and talked about the car with me - neat guy, your pops. Love the door skins.
Let us know how the R25's stick/wear. Running R35's, it was really hard to get them up to temp on mild days, and I had a really hard time getting the fronts to last anywhere near an entire season (FWD.) Either way, I think you'll be better off than with the toyos.

I bought a set of used R25B's last september. I used them for 4 events and haven't noticed much wear. On the colder days ~45-50 degrees they would heat up after 1-2 runs, which wasn't a big problem since I had a tire warmer. I plan to run these until they are slow and then use the new ones.

Cool,Craig in the cobra will have more than a little trouble than.
Look forward to having some extra competition at the Barrie events, looks like I'll go with hoosier cantilevers-can't afford new wheels again this year.

If you can find something that works for you in the discontinued hoosier list ($100 a tire), you can buy a set of diamonds for the money saved on tires.
I have a set of 13x10 Aero's that I bought for new for $30 each a couple years ago, these have 20x9 hoosier rains mounted though.
I don't really want to buy any more wheels, not sure how much longer I'll run the corolla suspension,I do have a complete miata I picked up for free so some of it may find its way onto a corolla....eventually.

does anyone know if slicks need to be heat cycled before the first event? I can mount them on my street car and get them up to temp if needed, but I'm not sure if it's necessary.

Where is this discontinued Hoosier list? I'm looking into R-comps for my RX-7.

They are slicks though not R comps if that matters to you.
Bah, can't use slicks for Solo. Thanks, though. Guess I'll just have to save up or get lucky and find some decent used R-comps.
