I have a knocking sound from the engine on my Mirage with a 4G63T swap. I checked the rod bearings and the wrist pins and didn't find any problems. It could be a main bearing but I didn't want to pull the girdle.
Its possible the noise is coming from the trans or the flywheel so I pulled the transmission. The trick now is to start the engine in the car without the trans installed. My electric drill and my 3/8s pneumatic don't have the cojones to crank the motor. How big of a drill am I going to need to fire this thing up?
I think you are asking the wrong question , how big of a MAN would be needed to hold the drill I am not sure there is a drill that could spin the engine fast enough.
Might be easier to make some kind of a "rig" to hold the starter next to the flywheel and see if the noise is gone.
BTW "most" knocking noise tend to be internal engine or drive belt related (water pump ...)

Thank you Paul. I removed all of the drive belts, removed the valve cover to check the cams, removed the balance shafts....this is sort of a last ditch effort. You might be right that the leverage of a starter against a 15" ring gear is going to be higher than a drill on a crank bolt could over come.
