no no no. The answer is to just require everyone under 18 to be wrapped in bubble wrap by a parent or guardian while driving or riding.
On a serious note. My son is four and I will tell you getting him in and out of a big truck is a huge pain. So think before you decide to go with a bigger vehicle. My truck isn't lifted or anything it's just got 31" of rubber. I wish I could have a car, but I needed a truck for work. FWIW My girlfriends Mazda 6 is perfect for pulling the little bugger in and out (assuming she didn't total it in her wreck last night 
)
We got through raising our boys (3 years apart) with a Taurus wagon, followed by a Sable wagon. Later I had to have a van as a company car, so I took an Astro which lasted until the younger one, now 23, pranged it into the back of a stationary SUV last summer. All through this I always had at least one other vehicle to amuse myself, a GLC, 2 GTIs,etc.
Rear facing car seats take up a huge amount of room. On my old B5 S4 my daughters rear facing car seat would really only fit in the middle of the back seat and would stick out forward between the two front seats.
It would fit behind the passenger seat if we moved it forward, but it wouldn't fit behind my seat and I'm about 6' tall.
WRX's aren't really any larger than the B5 S4. You can make it work, no doubt but it's not spacious by any stretch of imagination.
the car will be my DD. My son rides with me maybe 5 days a month. Just the one child now, but plans to have more. I leaning toward the WRX bc it looks like tons of fun, and now has the kit car advantage. If factory 5 produces that new project I would be half way there. Thanks for the replies.
I have a Outback and I am getting a WRX.
The space difference between them is negligible.

After I wrecked my WRX I got a mazdaspeed6. There is a LOT more room in the back seats of the speed6 than there was in the WRX. Inline acceleration was fairly similar. The speed6 did under-steer a bit more than the WRX but I corrected that with a stiffer rear sway bar and some adjustable front ball joints.
I wouldn't choose the speed6 over the WRX for serious track work or lots of autocross, but it is definitely entertaining.
