I was looking at Kia Forte Koups today but I would really like a manual trans, the salesman basically said theyre impossible to find. I found one 180 miles away at a dealer in Ohio(Im in Michigan), shouldnt these dealers be able to move cars between themselves without a problem or being that each has different owners, they might not want todo this?

To make it simple, the dealer with the car YOU want has to be willing to sell it and has to be able to get something in return.

Now if they just got it on the lot, fat chance. If the YOUR dealer doesn't have anything they want, fat chance. Plus you will get dealers that don't buy or sell with others.

Really to get the car you want, you are going to have to go get it.

Could get a truck to ship it to you. It's not as expensive as I would have thought.

Some dealers operate under a sort of "exchange" basis....that is, if your dealer does NOT have what you want, but a dealer he has the exchange agreement with does....they "trade" cars of similar value. Unfortunately, there are very few dealers in this type of arrangement, and they are almost always in the same geographic area.

A Ford dealer where my folks live has this type of agreement with 1 or 2 other dealerships. But sometimes it will even be contingent on a particular car. That is, a car that is in short supply (I've only seen 1 or 2 Forte Coupes so far in Memphis) may be excluded from the agreement.

Long answer short....like the guy said, if you want it you will have to go get it.

Depends on the deal. If the profit margin is too low, it doesn't make sense to spend the cash and risk the liability to go get a car.

We dealer trade all the time. We seldom do it on low profit cars like base Jettas and Golfs. Diesels yes, but not base manuals. 180 miles is a 2.5hr trip. Drive out there and buy it and then piss your local dealer off by making them chew the warranty costs for a few years.

In 2004 I bought a new car in Rocky Mt,NC. The dealer got it from another dealer in Danville VA because that was the closest one to be found that was equipped like I wanted. Distance between the dealers was about 120 miles.

You can always place an order with the dealer, who will order it from the factory, distributor, what ever. I have done this three times with my Ford dealer and once with my Jeep dealer. Got them exactly the way I wanted. I usually takes as little as 4 weeks but could go to 8. I just ordered a 2011 Fiesta, 6-8 wks.
