So the guy who regularly wrenches on our fleet (not the guy who worked on it before it blew up) wants 11 grand to put a Ford crate motor in ($6,300 for the motor) which is also backordered so I won't get the truck back on the road for another 2 1/2 months. His other motor vendor of choice (remanufactured) is even further out. Not sure that I want to roll the dice on a used motor, but the combination of price and leadtime is a big ouch. Any suggestions? Bear in mind that this is the SF bay area where things ain't generally cheap.
Every used engine I have installed this year, I have done twice.
Transmissions too. I got three transmissions for a Chrysler and they were all bad. One was clearly damaged, one had a crack in the case that wasn't visible until I had fluid in it, the third had a pan full of metal. Fourth one is due to arrive some time this week.
We only buy from suppliers that have a one year warranty and will cover labor claims, so this limits who we can buy from.

When I faced the same issue earlier this year, I made the decision that buying another truck was the solution. Expensive, but paying $13K for the motor and THEN having to wait 3 or 4 months just wasn't an option.
Not sure what your cash flow situation is, but my suggestion is to buy another truck, and then fix the one you've got as a back up. Trucks are expensive- you can sell one of them when you are done and probably still come out ahead.
I would also look into warrantied remanufactured motors, not used. A 15% upcharge in the job to have a motor with a 3 year warranty on it adds value.
So ATK and Ford are both backordered to July for this particular 4.6 version. What other vendors do you guys consider reputable?
