Mazda is a three syllable word?

That doesn't surprise me- a lot of times what i've garnered from the japanese language is there's no hard Z sound, and after a trailing S there's a bit of a "u" uptick IE MAS-u-DA, LEXUS-u, etc.

Pretty sure Mazda was called matsuda at the start of its life

Mazda is three letter word. The first one is Ma (horse), second is Z (by itself or automation), third is Da (arival). Horse arrive by itself is the literal translation.
