I bought a 2007 Cayman S. I had to wait until the S came into my price range as I knew that I would not be satisfied with the 245hp base knowing that the S was out there.
The reason I qualified my response with (realistic) is because I may dream of a GT-4 there is no way I can justify spending $90k+ for one. There are 2 cars I would get rid of my Cayman for...GT-4 or an R8.
@noddaz the porsche tax is real. I am always complaining about "having to pay for the badge" when I buy stuff for the car or it needs to be serviced.
After working on an upcoming article for Classic Motorsports, I soon found myself dream shopping for a Targa 911. Maybe there is a version out there that is at least somewhat close to my price range.

I'm looking at getting a 718 but I'm not planning on being Grass Rooty with the acquisition, just cut a check for a new one (base model with only a 19" rim and metallic paint upgrade = in the garage "i.e. including TLR & destination" for 65K or less). I'm 56 so this will be my "drive off into the sunset car" so get it new and pamper it until I'm too old to care.
I'm looking forward to the article because at this point I've convinced myself my 911 ship has sailed.

I'd be most pleased with a 911SC. They drive exactly how what pleases me, and they are old enough to be entertaining without being new enough to be boring.
Unfortunately, while I have achieved much better income lately, the value of 911SCs has gone from "just out of reach" to "LOLno, buy a house instead". And that was BEFORE the Covid markup.

Yes, the biggest lesson to learn is that if you can't afford it now you'll never be able to in the future because prices are going to track up at least as fast as your disposable income will. So might as well make that terrible financial decision now, while you still have time to recover from it!
IMO 930s are like slightly cooler E30M3s, in that their value is entirely derived from the cool and nostalgia factors, not anything about the driving experience. They're just normal 911s that are underpowered off boost, and then kill you instantly when they (eventually) come on boost. If you want one as a collector investment, go for it. But if you want one to actually drive, you want a non-turbo. A friend has a carrera 3.2 (the one right after the SC that's essentially the same car) with a 3.6 swap and as far as I'm concerned it's perfect other than clearly not having been designed to fit someone of my body proportions.

It hurts to know that if I had bought a FoRS in January 2020 like I'd been planning, I could have sold it in July and used the profit to buy a 911SC essentially for free. Or only $10kish, which is as close to free as you are going to get in the aircooled Porsche world.
A FOAF on the old Trackaddicts forum had a 930 for a while. (He dabbled in esoteric exotics and daily drove an old Bentley and a 308) His main takeway about his car, a '78 by recollection, was that it felt WAAAAY faster than the numbers would have you believe. Sure it was only 230hp or whatever but it hit all at once, like a sledgehammer, if you really wanted it.
A few years ago my friend bought a grey market '86 930 sight unseen from CA. $35k, but by the time it was delivered to NH it was worth $85k. berkeleying crazy.
