Just bought a one owner 2007 Escape 3.0 L. Nice car, but lacks grunt. Any benefits to be gained w/ CAI or cat back systems. Have seen computer upgrades, but hard to believe the claims.
Thanks

Most of the Ford 3.0 DOHC engine were rated at 200 HP but that would be at the flywheel and perhaps with out acc. so what you may see at the wheels would be something much lower. If you can find a set of the Contour 2.5L SVT heads complete with cams you will see a nice jump in power. But for bolt on stuff your left only with exhaust and ECU mods.
Yes, you can build your own intake and it should give you a solid improvement. The factory intake was very restrictive for noise.
If you're really serious, you can have a catless Y-pipe made - those freed up 20-30 hp on the dyno when they were briefly available (for the Taurus with the same engine).
Yes, you can also use something like a diablotune to advance the spark and run midgrade or premium to make a little more power.
Unfortunately none of these things really helps what the Escape needs most - torque. There are people running 3.0's with custom engine management in Contours and Cougars that have swapped in bigger throttle bodies, that would probably improve torque.
Most so called CAI's and cat backs are not worth the money when it comes to power increase.
A ECU change will give much more bang for the buck. Ford gained 13HP on the Zetec in the ZX2SR. The factory CIA was freed up by removing some of the noise suppression.
An underdrive pulley is still best and overlooked.
No power mods here, but I have a 3.0 Tribute. Other than the horrendous gas mileage, I'm constantly impressed by this vehicle.
That's all I got.
Look into what Ford did to the 2010 Escape. Starting in 2010, the 3.0 V6 in the Escape was rated at 240 HP. I think it was mostly an intake plenum thing, but I would look into that.
But don't expect miracles. The 2007 Escape still has the 4 speed which is not a great transmission. They fixed that in 2008 or 2009 with the 6 speed.
