Keep the economy growing Now the truck thats pulling it will need Com Plates in most states due to over 10,000GVW but no CDL is needed com plate with privete pass insurance. But to be on the safe side i carry a copy of the book and page in my center console of my truck. I was going to post link to the book but could not find the link but did find one stating some states require a NON- COM speacail lic for large RV's heres that link but it would depend on your issueing lic state. http://changingears.com/rv-sec-state-rv-license.shtml

But you also have to watch out for this scenario, even though it is RV/Camper registered....

Say the RV/trailer plate is good until 10k pounds, you hook up your F550/C5500 plated at 18k to go spend a relaxing weekend away from home. 40 minutes from home, you get stopped by DOT. They ask where is your CDL. You reply, "Don't need it. It is an RV." Cop replies back, "Plated for 28k, where is your CDL?" And just continue the conversion on. Pretty soon, YOU are going to be stuck in a position of unhooking the RV, to be under weight, or call someone with proper licensing to continue on with your trip, even though the "law" is really on your side because you aren't pulling 28k worth of weight. Just remember, it is up to YOU to know the law.

Do you have/had additional stickers on said trailer? If you do/did, you open yourself up to being stopped for being a commercial carrier and it doesn't matter jack E36 M3 what it pulling said trailer.

curtis73 wrote: Those are interstate DOT rules. Some states have additional restrictions, but that is the basic setup. No state requires a CDL for private use. Some states require a Class B non-commercial license but only a few. Some states also require an endorsement for air brakes if you don't have a CDL (air brake is almost always included with CDL).

I'm not going to argue a single point, because they for the most part are spot on. But who is deciding private use? You or the officer making your life hell on the side of the road because they can?

Put a ports potty and sink in an old class 8 truck. Think auto shift Volvo. Register it as an rv.

I have a class A CDL with an air brake exemption. Meaning I can drive over 26k but nothing with air brakes, so basically nothing LOL. Anyway I have been stopped by the Super Troopers here in TN a lot. Spent way to much time on the side of the road, at weigh stations and in court. It is my understanding that non comm use doesn't need CDL.

I would second the c4500 class GM truck. Very capable vehicle. Comfortable and surprisingly handles pretty decent. One trip through the scales I was at 32,000 lbs. The truck handled that just like I had 18,000 lbs on it. Of course because my employer were idiots it only had a 16,000 lb tag on it so they got to pay a huge fine.

Like many have said look at a medium duty truck. Most are similar drivetrain wise and will be plenty comfortable with that size trailer. Check with your DMV about registering it as an RV to see if it avoids CDL and fuel tax issues. I had a couple of Internationals and they weren't the fastest things on the road but they never felt overworked and they lasted forever.

No worries... Its been a while since I got my CDL. I think I got it in 1994 in PA, then transferred it to IN, LA, CA, TX, MT, and back to PA.

Its safe to say that I might be behind the latest news

Apologies... I should have clarified that I did that towing commercially on a commercial license.
