Why is this such a burr under your saddle? I like Fords. They are always my first consideration on every purchase and I go from there.

What burrs my saddle is when people claim that the whole thing was bought, lock, stock, and barrel from Toyota. It was not. It also burrs me when people think that it wasn't developed in the US, and had to be totaly bought from Toyota. Both opinions have been stated in this thread.
The way you replied in my first quote even suggested that Toyota did all of the work. Your second statement (this one) is what happened, and is much clearer.
I don't like it when people disparage the US and engineers here. Particularly in the auto industry. There's a reason the US patent office is opening it's first branch office outside of DC here in Detroit this year.

The violent crime rate in DC is down and the turnover rate at the patent office isn't high enough? 
I am a US engineer working for a Japanese company. I know what it is like to be looked down on (this is a figurative statement given I am 6'5" and they are Japanese) because you are American.
I no longer have this problem because I went to Japan and pointed out their mistakes. After you make them loose face because of lack of skill, they stop looking down at you and start giving you respect.
