So in my slow research for a down the road fun family hauler (looking at v8 4 door cars for sub $6-7k) I stumbled across the Genesis sedans with the v8. In comparison to the LX platform from Chrysler that I'm leaning toward they seem pretty similar. the 4.6 makes 375-385 hp and the 5.0 makes around 430 and in what seems like a pretty nice 4000 lbs chassis. They also use a ZF 6 speed auto that a lot of higher end cars used in the same timeframe. Does anyone here have any first hand experience with these cars? I know that was around the time it seemed like Hyundai started stepping there game up but I am still a little leery of cars make by the Koreans.

I drove my uncle's for a couple of days. I think it had the 6 cylinder, but it's been a couple of years. I didn't find anything wrong with it in my limited experience. It was a nice car, and I was considering them when shopping for family cars myself.
The ones out there for sale seem to have a crap ton of miles on them. I was looking at some of the early 4.6 Tau cars with 180+k miles. Can't say I've seen or heard anything seriously evil about them.

I'd rock one. Add e85 and a turbo and surprise just about anything on the road

I was really hoping there was a link in your post to show that such a thing exists already

To be honest thats the basic recipe to make anything more awesome
I notice soot marks on the bumper above the tailpipes on these more than any other modern gas burner. Always wondered why.

Ive driven a 5.0L Equus and a 3.8L/auto sedan and 3.8/6spd manual coupe. I liked all of them although the manual coupe had an evil throttle hang that made me think i couldnt own one without a tune to correct that. I liked the Equus powertrain very much.

I think that probably has more to do with the shape of the exhaust tips than anything else. One of the Foci has that problem too.

Exhaust shape probably has very little to do with it. High levels of particulates (soot) are a pretty well known issue with direct injection vehicles. To my eye, it seems more common on Kia/Hyundai cars than other makes but that's hardly scientific. I haven't noticed it on vehicles made in the last couple of years, so perhaps they've gotten the issue resolved (lower compression, leaner fuel mix, more EGR, etc).
I considered the Genesis/Equus/K900 pretty seriously when I was looking for a fun family hauler myself just a few months back. I'm a big Hyundai/Kia fan, I think they're great values. The cars pack a lot of features for the money. My issues with the Genesis were:
At least in the earlier ones, the interior has too cheap of a feel. My '13 Elantra seemed to feel just as nice inside, I think the Genesis needs (needed?) nicer materials.
As is common with all Korean cars, the chassis tuning isn't quite right. The handling isn't crisp at all, but yet it still manages to have a somewhat stiff ride. I found the Genesis very tempting...very tempting. But the lack of driving excitement pushed me away.
I have been doing some Genesis 5.0 R-Spec research and did come across this: Issue with 2012 5.0 R-Spec's
Other than that I haven't found any major issues. It sounds like the redesign made them softer, so they sure seem like a hell of a bargain for the $

1qt per 1k miles is pretty much the norm across the industry. Honda's have been doing it for 20 years and no one calls them unreliable (except me but I'm a Hondahater).

yea as much as i hate to say it i do keep hearing this 1 qt/1k miles more and more regularly in the past 5 years more then i'd ever heard before. I've come to find out my wife's van is living up to this new standard pretty well. As much as i hate it i've basically just come to terms with checking the level around once a month and adding as needed. So it's nothing new for me.

It really became an issue with the K24's in the TSX when the OLM told them they could run 9-10k miles, but was out of oil in 4k. It wasn't uncommon to drain a quart to quart and a half at 5-6k mile oil change and that be all the oil that was left. For that reason we used to overfill the 2.4's just a hair (4.5qts instead of 4.2).
