I am going about 200 miles to pick up my refurbished 95 Miata. Could I bring the old engine home in the trunk? That would save on logistics. I could rent a car one way and drop it off and drive the Miata home.

Pretty sure I have seen it done, but not casually and it might have been a short block.
Here is the only picture of the activity that I can find. Not me, just random internet image.
Might be easier to put engine in the cabin and passenger in back.
I'm pretty sure you could do it if you were willing to take the head and oil pan off and do it in three pieces. That's likely to make a mess, though.

This is what I did when I had to move a Miata motor in a Miata.
A loose seat is awkward to deal with as well. But a seat is maybe 25 lbs. The engine is quite a bit more.
Would probably fit with the manifolds removed. Though personally, I'd rather not spoil the first impression of my refurbed car with a 300lb engine in the trunk.
The 95 Miata in question is red so: Using the red Miata above as a guide this idea is a FAIL since the purpose was to haul the engine and SWMBO at the same time and her commitment does not rise to the level of 200 miles in the trunk. Thanks for the pics.
