My wife's friend crashed her Taurus and is looking for a replacement.
Strict criteria:
Smaller than a Tortoise.
4 doors.
<35,000 miles.
NLT 30 mpg.
under $13,000.
I can find cars all day long that fill three of the four.
Thanx, Dan

Pre-2012 Focus? Pre-2012 Elantra? I feel like you might even be able to get a new Versa done under 13k - don't those start at 9990?
Yuck, I'd avoid the Germans that new, they scare me. I like the Hyundai thing. Elantra, Sonata, Even something like the Kia Optima... probably can be had rather easily in that range.
Well, for everyone else asking that question I'd say the Fiesta is pretty, the Escort seems ok and the Fusion looks pretty nice too.
For you - a VW TDI swapped into a Nash Metropolitan seems more "right"
Revision: I see you require 4 doors so that means its a Statesman or an Ambassador which might be too heavy for the TDI even with more boost.

If the Fiesta is ok, you can almost get one brand new for $13k.
(looking at the S Sedan, it's MSRP is just under $13k, 2011 Focuses are ~$14-16k, if they are available)

I misread - he needs 4 doors. Fiesta is out.
Don't feel bad. I started on too! Sometimes you have more time than money so you are stuck dreaming. Or you have the money but no time to really get out and look at your options. Me I have nothing put time to kill.

this is what came to my mind first, keep in mind that when you're rushed to make a decision is when you get bent over the barrel

All 2011 US Fiesta's ARE 4 doors. or 5.
So... when I google Fiesta... all I see are little, sexy 3 door hatches. Naturally... we here in the US can't get those, right? Like this:

Even in Europe, Fiestas are available in 4 doors. So they can be gotten, even there.
