The R version was of the S-type. I definitely wish the S type looked like the X type instead. My gut instinct is that the X type looks better than it is, but i have this nagging suspicion that it's pretty much as good as it looks. Only problem for me is finding the rare spec I'd actually give measurable E36 M3s about (3.0/manual/awd). At least one of those rare beasts has changed hands on this forum and i believe is still owned by kyallroad.

Not sure about engine size, but this can be had for half challenge money

Pretty cool to see our car show up in this thread (the blue one)

We are looking a bit different these days as we hunt down all the subie's and evo's in the american rallycross world.   Next up, stage rally.

Technically it belongs to TigerMom, it's her daily driver.

That's awesome! Can you give us some details about the car? I assume it's a 3L, 5 speed manual, all wheel drive, have you done anything to get more power? Did you have to hack the awd controller for more rally friendly performance? What about the suspension?

That thing must hall the mail.  I had one with the 3.0 and it was a respectable performing car.  Take all the weight out of it and I bet it is a blast to drive.  I also bet that with all that weight gone the driveline will be much happier.  The driveline in these were I think best described as adequate.  It was really a FWD car with th RWD system tacked on and as such the entire RWD system always appeared to be not a beefed up as it should have been (starting with the transfer case).

It is indeed the rare 3.0 5-speed, awd.  As of now the powertrain is completely stock, but custom headers/y-pipe are being built by Nautilus Performance in Louisiana. We will bolt a high-flow cat in right after the Y, as stage rally rules demand a fully street-legal machine, not to mention that cars with no cat are poisonous.  We like to be able to run the engine in the garage from time to time, and also not make fellow motorists nauseous on the road. 

Suspension is also completely stock, but we have a full custom set of rally coilovers from Flatout Suspension standing by (pic attached) .  We will attempt to run the Southern Ohio Forest Rally next June on the stock suspension as it has performed extremely well in rallycross and SOFR is quite a smooth bunch of roads.

 

Our only performance mods so far would be a weight reduction of around 200-300 lbs, battery relocation from the front overhang to the floor behind passenger seat, some brilliant EvoCorse rally wheels, and this super cool celica wang here.  Lol.

This old thread is good news. I'm trying to talk myself into an X-Type near me being off-road capable enough to have some fun in it, since that's the second half of why I want an AWD winter car in the first place.

These used a version of the 3.0 duratec didn't they?  Would it be possible to upgrade to the 3.5 or 3.7 L versions?  I know much was published about the 3.5L specifically being able to fit all engine bays that held 3.0 Duratecs but it wasn't used until after X Type production stoped so not sure if true?

The IVCT versions can be had in up to 305 HP varrients with the 3.5 being available at 290 HP.  Seems like a reasonable upgrade from the 230 HP of the 3.0.

It would have to be the 2004+ though with the newer AWD system though, right? I had the idea the older one was at its limits with stock power levels.
