So I was looking at mining equipment for my job and thought wouldn't it be cool to take one of the big CAT or Detroit Diesel engines like the CAT C11 ACERT. And put it an old COE truck like this one.
And make a retro style Dakar vehicle.
I swear I am not crazy.
I thought you said you had a bad idea.
Like not doing the stuff you said.
I've read a tiny bit about Cummins swaps, particularly the 4BT (which probably isn't enough engine there...), which are pretty self-contained. Not knowing much about diesels, how much "infrastructure" do those other engines require? (electronics, pumps, plumbing, etc...)
Why aren't there build pics in this thread already?

Seriously, I've been nursing an idea along the lines of this for a vintage car hauler.

IIRC, the 4BT makes around 300 lb ft of torque stock, and it's used in bread trucks and the like. I don't think it would ever be a real performance monster, but it would work.
I've been wondering if any of the big diesel fours out of Mitsu Fusos will fit in a Montero.
E:

Toyota makes a diesel 4 with almost 400 ftlbs of torque.

And there are plenty of engines I'd like to get off here.
as long as you dont paint it
oh, you're crazy....in a good way
i'm with ransom and hrdlydangerous. you should already be fabbing the engine mounts!
That COE would rock

Ok it looks like the a big Cummins or Detroit Diesel are much cheaper then a CAT engine. Where can I find a transmission which can handle the around 1000lbft of a 8V71?
I don't know when I am going to do this idea.

I was at the drag strip last week and I saw someones attempt at making a knockoff International CXT.
They took a regular international truck(looked like it was from a larger Box truck) and slapped a Dodge bed on the back of it.
Looked pretty cool.
COEs are cool as hell (can I say that?) - make GREAT car haulers!
A Chevy COE would make an awesome candidate for a car hauler.
However, I would think a Duramax or 5.9L Cummins would be a sufficient engine for a newer motor.
This would be what I would want:

In reply to SyntheticBlinkerFluid:
But sufficient is boring.
Get an 8V 5.9 Cummins from a dodge ram
Get a vacuum supplied propane injection system.
Laugh as you pass the guy in the Camaro.

School buses have good auto trannys, good diesel engines, all the add on stuff you need, and sell for 2000.00. Go forth and enjoy.

How about a 12v71 twin turbo, like this:

Cool! Now post the bad idea.
That truck sounds amazing! Holy E36 M3!
4BT Cummins engines can follow all the same power formulas as a 6BT, just at 30% less power.

I spent a number of years on the driving/heavy lifting side of one of these
I do not see the attraction to Stacey's project above. I do not miss the bad gasket around the steering column shaft that used to direct winter's cold air right up my left pant leg and the heater vent dumping hot air onto my right leg.
The big cat/Detriot ect won't fit under that cab, but like chw said take the engine/tranny from a retired school bus, and the transfer case and axles from a 2 1/2 ton army truck and you will have a different off roader.
I thaught there was a bad idea in this thread some place.
I want this!!!

thought the exact same thing when I saw the opening post.
But then I thought about the poster, and could not figure when this project would fit into his HUGE list of other things.
I would like to point out- noting that diesels are not exactly trivial, that IF that project turns to be too daunting, a large gas motor would work fine in a truck like that. Matched with a good trans. MIGHT be able to fit it into the project list, then.
