a vice is nice for doing u-joints- i use my vice to hold my balljoint/u joint press, which is like a big heavy duty c clamp. i paid $20 for the tool at a yard sale a couple of years ago.
it makes changing a u joint into a 5 minute ordeal, which would be a 2 minute ordeal if i had an air compressor to power that impact wrench that's taking up space in my tool box..
If things are moderately clean and you don't drop a needle roller in the way, it can be done on the floor with a tiny ballpeen and a 3/4" nut. (the nut keeps you from wanging on the new universal)

Good news. Using all ya'lls advice, I grabbed my 4 lbs. Sledge hammer, but instead of smashing a couple sockets, I grabbed my 3/4'' SS rod. Hammered a few times on that and the cups popped out faster than I have ever done. The C Clamp slid the new cups in quickly as well.
Funny thing is, when I slipped the shaft forward to pull it out of the pinion, the cup on the bottom fell off the cross, hit the ground with a puff of rust dust.
Another thing, I actually had to tighten the pinion nut a tiny bit to snug the yoke back up a bit, but all the vibration is gone, even at 90 M.P.H. When it was it's worse. Yeah, I did a top speed test on an empty straight stretch of flat road on day. Heh
Grease 'em, that's how you got into trouble.
Tighten the pinion nut? Do they have crush nuts? Anywho, glad it worked out, you're now the expert on your street.

Sad part is, I did the day I got it! I pumped in some till a little squeezed out of the cups. But, the guy I got it from wasn't known for doing car care nor did he take it to a reputable shop, just to the closest place to his house. And I've heard stories about this place!
