So, I plugged a scanner into the Escort to verify the CEL was for the codes I thought it was. Then I cleared the codes. When I was finished, the oem temp gauge was swung WAY past the max high mark and stuck there. Never seen this happen before. My gut says to disconnect the battery for a few seconds to fully de-power the gauge, to get it to "re-set" itself, but won't know until I try it. Ideas on what caused this?
Sensor grounded or something in the wiring from the gauge has?

That's certainly what it acts like, like it's getting full battery voltage. Which could potentially be a big enough drain to cause a problem for a Braille battery with a reserve capacity of only 18. I just can't imagine how it could happen out of the blue. Was working perfectly, like it had for the last 15 years, then this occurs when I do a KOEOff scan and erase. Ima try unplugging the sensor and see if there is a change, that might tell me something.
Start by disconnecting the sensor and see what happens. Then report back. Is it a one or two wise sensor? Is the sensor wired directly to the gauge or does it go to the computer and then the computer controles the gauge?
1-wire, goes from the sensor to the PCM, PCM sends a PWM signal to the gauge. Unplugged sensor, no change, key on or off, engine on or off. I'm wondering if the scanner did a gauge sweep and the temp gauge needle got mechanically stuck at it's current 1/2 inch past the MAX line position.
Update. The temp gauge needle has magically unstuck itself and the thing now functions completely normally. Weirdest car thing I've seen in a long time.
