Of course, if said clients include Madonna, the E39 M5 really is the only choice.
Looks like it is going to be an E39. Not sure if it'll be a M5 or a 540/545 though. I should settle on one in the next week or so.
I have a friend looking to sell his M5 in the Atlanta area. He's motivated. It does have some issues but only because of lack of funds for repairs.
I am a BMW guy but I don't really love the M5. If you put a gun to my head and forced me to answer though, I'd say E39 because they were probably one of the best looking cars BMW ever made. Black please.
A few years ago while waiting for my Phaeton to be serviced I took a test drive in a 2005 E60 M5 (6 speed manual). It was a whole lot of fun and I only scared the salesman a little bit That said, the thirst of the V-10 and the cost of any potential big repairs kept me from doing anything silly and buying it.
Color choice will be important. Blue with fancy rims screams "I'm a huge douche!" Black with chrome rims screams "I have an expensive car and I want you to know it" Grey on slate rims states "Oh this? I guess its kinda fast, sure. Wanna get some lunch?" White says "This is my wife's M5" or "I'm a salesman from Texas"
Please note that I would drive an M5 that literally said "I'm a huge Douche" on the hood in yellow letters. Or "Hitler wasn't so bad". They are amazing and I want one.

750 - V12 insanity.
OK, well a possible change in plans. Looks like an loaded, very well maintained XDrive 540 wagon just fell in my lap. I am gonna get it for the wife to DD. I can swap with her for times when I need it for clients. This frees me up to buy whatever I want. So, still buy an M5? Or? If I buy something else, it would have to be a P car or anther BMW. That's just the way I roll
Same budget??? 996TT or Cayman S come immediately to mind. I'd look into care and feeding costs though.
I must have been reading your thread title docwyte - I'll go with boxster S for an alternative to e39 m5
Budget could go to $20k but I'd rather stay in the $10-12 range. Wanna pay cash, no loans. And I don't want a convertible. Cayman over Boxster for sure and maybe think about a 911 or z4 Coupe too. I know that an M5 and Cayman are opposite ends of the spectrum but I can justify either based on my different types of use.
2000 E39 M5 $12.5k Just leaving this here.
In reply to T.J.: I'm on Lejeune and know where he parks if anyone wants someone to look it over. From what I've seen in passing, it looks like it's been run pretty hard.

Well, every E39 M5 is a 6-speed, not every 540 is. So, from that standpoint, yes. I'll bet that there are still more 540i 6-speeds out there.
Local small dealer has an 02 m5 with 150 k miles for 11, 500. Pretty sweet good condition. Www.carcollectionnc.com
I love M cars especially the E39 M5. But, a possible cheaper solution is a mid 2000's AMG. Possibly an e55 AMG, they're getting to their bottom depreciation point. I know you can get an early 2000's for less than 10k and sometimes 6 or 7k. But, the lack of manual transmission is a killer
That M5 is listed on their site as 12,900 but speaking with one of their people today(its right next door to the mower repair shop i use) the car is 11,500
didn't someone just post a green e39 m5 around here for under 10k? Seems like the needs were pretty minimal - like a window regulator, mirror dimming and a few iffy pixels
