I don't think that's a 21' trailer.

That is a 16' trailer. Plus the V-nose.

On a V nose trailer, the standard is to measure where the square box ends.

I can almost guarantee it has (2) 3500 lb axles.

If I'm right, it's about $1000 more than you can buy a brand new one off Ebay.

At least according to the specs on the new version of that trailer, it's light enough that 7k axles are fine. Honestly the length/v nose sounds about perfect for what he wants, but the width kinda kills being able to put any full bodied car in it.

I agree. That's the spec I recommended earlier.

I agree 8' is much easier. 8x16's are rare.

But the ad says 21', and the price is too high.

I hadn't even considered looking at eBay.  This is new and wider.  Not too long.

Since it doesn't sound like anyone has a better deal for cheaper, I may pull the trigger.

Got any advice for those of us looking for a big trailer? I was trying to find a 30+ foot enclosed but after looking at a few over 6000# empty, I've decided to find something a little easier on my 96 Ford dually. (Bumper tow rating: 10k).

Currently looking at 28'ers. I will likely never pull a Miata, just actual cars, often with back doors.

I have a 28' v nose and the v makes it possible to put one pointy nose car in front and one behind.  I towed a 94 z28 and a 94 miata together for around 500 miles, and my 240z and mustang have hibernated in it all winter

we ended up getting a golf cart for racetrack duty and the extra length allows comfort around cart and car even when I have tires on my fold out racks and a grill

Where you're going to run into issues with larger cars is width.  When we bought our trailer, I was just hauling Miatas, and our 8.5x24 was downright roomy.  Our Camaro is a tight fit...

If you can tie down directly from the front/rear it's not that big an issue, as long as you can get out of the car.  Our Camaro ties down over the wheels, and it's pretty tight getting in there to tie it down.  More overhang (ie, most sedans) would make it worse.

As far as getting out of the car, a driver's side escape door/hatch, and inner wheel well that's removable will help a lot.  Something I wish I had optioned, but it wasn't a necessity with the Miata.

If you need the length (28-30'), I would take a hard look at goosenecks.  More capacity, and will tow better.

IMHO a winch is better than an escape door, assuming you're towing cars that can be easily fitted with a hook on the front.

In reply to codrus (Forum Supporter) :

I have a winch, and I agree, for most cars.  If it has a center tow point, or two so you can use a strap to center up the pull.

Our ZL1 has a single tow point on the front, and it's off-center which makes using the winch a PITA.  I need to rig a pulley that I can anchor to the E track on one side to center up the cable going into the winch to so it spools properly.

In reply to Rodan :

How far is the door from clearing the inner fender? We found that a set of 2x12 "ramps" on the floor raised the car enough that the door clears the fender. That plus placing the car slightly off center to the passenger side leaves enough room that it's only a little annoying to get in and out of the car. Your camaro is wider, but only by 2-3 inches, at least according to the internet.

In reply to dps214 :

It's more than 2", definitely.  And the off center trick (I do that with the Miata) won't work because of how tight it is to get the tie downs set up in the rear.  I need as much room as I can get on both sides.

Dissenting voice here.

You need a 16' enclosed trailer with 7500# axles. It is perfect for what you want, with a little extra room.

There is a big difference in towing a 16" 7500, and a 20' 10,000.  One takes no effort at all. The other is a constant reminder that you have to be concerned. Adds stress.

But that means that it actually gets used less. Every time you have to move it you will say, "Do I REALLY need to...".

Plus, since you are using it as a garage, it will be much too easy to overpack it. You will always be thinking "Just one more thing...", and the darned thing will get so crammed you can't use it effectively.

I know. I've got a 24' trailer sitting in my back yard right now that has become exactly that.

If you are serious about wanting to go big, I'll sell my 24' trailer for $4500. New axle, tires, 10K axles, AC on the roof, electric wired interior.

But then I would buy a smaller one.

SVreX,

If you were in the Northwest I think I would take you up on that even though I am shopping for a 20'. I tow behind a truck with a 9' camper, so I have a hitch extension. Just so tired of the long, scary, hokey ramps to get the E30 onto my current trailer. I have been looking for a good deal on a good trailer for a while. Jcamper

Now we are talking. Throw camper on, find a buddy to drive in shifts, I am only 40 hours of driving before I get to you. About 460 gallons of diesel there/back. cheeky
