This must be F1 cars 1950 to 1960 from Goodwood. No, it's not terribly fast but it's slow enough that you can see the driver input, the traction (gained or lost), etc. So my question is this: If you were going to build a GRM "homage" car to these cars, what's the Easy button? An older Sprint Car frame with Miata suspension? What's the "Interesting" button? Looks like 2.5 liter straight fours and V-6's. Surely there must be a candidate engine that would come to mind...

We're big fans of vintage racing too.
Easy button for that type of experience would be to buy a used Thunder Roadster.

Thunder Roadster is WAY too homely for that application...
Miata arms are too short to build a proper single seater, right? A set of uppers and lowers that would utilize Miata uprights and such would be interesting. Build a narrow-ish single seater frame like a Formula V. I don't know. I think the beauty in these older cars is the high slip angles that the bias ply tires run and lack of aero. Give me any car on fairly narrow bias plys and I'm going to have a good time.
It's interesting that cars with vastly inadequate safety measures are allowed to be driven hard in this manner. And by interesting I mean awesome.

Perhaps a Locost with more open wheel body work?
Years ago someone did these concepts for a Caterham inspired by old Indy cars.
I love the old Indy car idea......
I wonder if anyone made kits for them !
In reply to Kreb :
I was thinking the same thing; the #1 Ferrari didn't even have a roll bar. One wrong move and a rollover would snap his neck. Kind of scary to see them racing that hard.
In reply to jstein77 :
not as scary as actually seeing them crash... this was Duncan Pittaway's crash...
fortunately for all of us, he recovered and then rebuilt The Beast of Turin

When I was learning the lines at Hallett for my Boxster, I came across some Formula Vee videos. Light, fast enough to get into trouble, but not 'dangerous fast', narrow tire, open wheel, pure fun.

The hard work is already done, just need a healthy savings account.
Really enjoyed watching that.

The reason they built that car is basically why I started the Aluminum Monocoque thread. But I think a 50's front engine car F1 could be re-created much more easily and for a LOT less cost.
