Nope! On Gremlin's "X" was basically an appearance package and could be had with either the 258 I-6 or the 304 V8. All AMC V8's share outside block dimensions so a 390 or 401 will fall right in.

Now if we were talking 68-70 AMX and Javelins, then "X" in the VIN meant 390. (AMX as the VIN letters on an AMX meant 390/4-Speed).
