When I was a teen, the only welder I had access to for years was my dad's oxy/acetelyne rig. After getting really good at gas welding, TIG was a breeze. It's almost exactly the same, but you can control the heat with the foot pedal!
Aluminum is much tougher to pick up though as the melting point is lower and tougher to control.
