Volkswagen of America announced today that it will be changing its name to Voltswagen of America, a “public declaration of the company’s future-forward investment in e-mobility.”
Highlighting the name change, President and CEO of Voltswagen of America Scott Keogh said, “We might be changing out our K for a T, but what we aren't changing is this brand’s commitment to making …

We are being punk'd right?
The irony is everything I've seen about the ID4 isn't very good...
They should have waited till Apr1 and got same press but no stupid.
The idea is that illiterates have said "Voltswagen" for decades, which probably made lots of people mad at corporate headquarters. The April Fools' (purposely pluralized) component is good, however, tying it into that whole electric car thing--so timely for marketing purposes . . .
"Please forget that we cheated on diesel emissions for years and did untold amounts of damage to the environment while pretending to be green"
So do we work on e-names for the other car companies? General Motors could become General Electric. (It has a nice ring to it.)

In reply to David S. Wallens :
I could be wrong but I think that one's already taken
April 1 is early this year
Seems risky to send out the message of, "we are very serious about EV" as an April fools joke.
Serious questions... The prevailing stereotype of VWs is electrical gremlins and CEL lights.
- are we comfortable with VW as ALL electric?
- what has been the track record of reliability on the eGolf?
- what has been the track record of reliability of VW's recent Hybrid offerings?
In reply to David S. Wallens :
It's a shame that GM sold off EMD, that would have been a decent brand to launch EVs from.
Shades of the IHOP International House of Burgers thing? Maybe using the same ad agency?

I agree, VW and electrical/electronic reliability hasn't been good for many decades now (if ever). However, VW continues to add value to black electrical tape (that's used to 'cover up' all the illuminated dash warning lights).
If they can self-destruct diesels maybe they can also do the same for Electric cars, it's kind of sneaky since Porsche is investing in synthetic fuels.
In reply to John Welsh :
I can't tell if it's a bad april fools joke or a bad re-branding.
Everyone is going to forget it soon. Who ever says Volkswagen rather than VW when referring to their cars? What is the sign outside of dealerships and on the cars? Again VW, not spelled out. Most people will never notice.
So...just the American branch is changing their name? What about the rest of the Dub Empire? Not buying it.
Maybe they can spend money making reliable cars instead of wasting marketing dollars
back in the 1970s they had the great idea to change the name to VAG , Volkswagen Audi Group,
So they changed all the signs at the dealers in Germany to VAG ,
Later they changed it back !
Technically they ALL have batteries, right?
I think it's an April Fool's joke, but if it is my local newspaper got punked as they ran the story today.
Is German April Fools 2 days early?
Shades of the time GM claimed they were going to demonstrate their environmental commitment by... changing their logo from blue to green.
I'm hoping this is an April Fools joke. It is likely to draw jokes regardless.
