I mean I've never looked up how many E30's were built compared to miatas but I very seriously doubt less miatas were built. In my area(in the frozen north no less)I see several miatas a day in the summer vs and average of maybe 2 or 3 e30's a summer.
Ok rant off, glad you were looked after so well...maybe I'll try them again in the spring as my insurance company charges me close to a grand and tells me the max payout will be $1200
This is a pretty spectacular Miata, not just a bit modified It's one of about two dozen. It may be a judgement call on the part of the agent.
I was actually talking about the op's miata
My Miata was anything but spectacular.
And the first time I called them about it they said no. I got it covered through geico. Then frivolous terminated my coverage because they found my name on the local autocross results page. I called and lead with saying I hoped they could help me since my other insurance dropped my car due to racing. Then they asked what I did and if it was modified and covered it

Hmm,guess I'll try again in the spring and include a picture I would never ever send to a normal insurance company.

Not true, that thing was awesome!
Don't Hagarty's policies have a bunch of restrictions? In addition to the aforementioned garage stipulation, I thought that they had mileage maximums, only used at car shows and church on Sundays, et cetera. They gave me a bunch of crap about Frankenfiat, which although something of a cluge, still fits better into the classic category than a Miata.
I want to be able to drive my cars wherever and whenever I want, my impression was that that isn't cool with Haggerty, is that the deal? Can I drive to work, what's the point of a car you can't use cause your insurance won't cover you.

I wanted to drive to work 2 or three times a week when the weather was good. They did not like that but said 1 time a month was OK, I was not OK with it. Ended up with safeCo agreed value, ended up moving my other cars to them also as it was cheaper then keeping the others with Flo.
Yes, Hagerty has a bunch of use restrictions. Basically, it can't be used for anything but fun.
Collector car insurance is an entirely different beast than private passenger. They really only intent to underwrite show cars, weekend cruisers and the like. They charge very low premium because they expect that the risk taken with the typical "trailer queen" is very low. It's also why they have a ton of restrictions. Unlike personal lines insurance, where profit margins are extremely slim, collector car coverage is a good money maker for most carriers who offer it.
Good to hear. I got Hagerty on the 1970 F250. It was super easy to set up and some emailed photos were enough to get it in place. With $10k in coverage they charge me $200/year and that's awesome to me.
Yes there are restrictions on use - that's why it's collector car coverage. They're totally reasonable restrictions in my book.
the predicament i'm in is this. my 240Z is completely redone. it was my challenge car so while the cash investment is sub 2 grand, the time and effort plus all the time that went into making parts deals work is substantially more. it is literally a trailer queen, it lives in a locked enclosed trailer and gets pulled to events. several years ago i got agreed value policies through state farm for the belair, impala, and chevelle by submitting 4 pictures of the exterior corners. this year i tried to do the same for the Z car, but this time i was told they wanted an underhood shot and an interior shot to make sure it's not a racecar. boned. v8, roll cage, sheet metal dash and seat, can't pull that one off. not pulling insurance fraud either. so i have it covered with a standard policy right now, and in the event of total loss they're telling me max $2400 payout. we all know a clean early Z is worth considerably more than that, so i'm not sure what their basis is. i'd like to be covered for at least 5k in the event of theft or some bozo hitting me on the rare occasion that i drive it on the street, or if someone jumps out in front of my truck when i'm trailering it to an event. i absolutely love the car and if something were to happen to it, $2400 is not going to make me whole. neither is 5, but it'll go farther toward it.
Those restrictions sound way more strict than what I was told. Basically they wanted to know that my wife and I each had Daily drivers and that we had a garage spot for it. I told them that during the summer my kids multitude of bikes and other wheeled toys took my miatas spot in the garage, they were fine with that. They were also fine with autocross, track days, etc. Patgizz, the way they got my value was ask me how much I'd have to pay to get the car back in that shape paying someone else to do the work, it sounds perfect for you.
Hagerty is fully aware of the nature of my MG. A V8 isn't a showstopper.
I have had my cars covered by them for years and have had to make a couple of claims. Every time, perfect service and no issues!

There's no reason you can't insure it with Hagerty, from what you describe. They insure plenty of race cars. Obviously there is no coverage while it's participating in an event, but while it's in the trailer or at a show, you'd have coverage.

Strange... They insured my E30 with no questions asked.
FWIW, whenever I'm doing "insurance stuff" I rarely use online stuff. Calling and talking to a real person seems to get the best results.
I have three cars insured with Hagerty. Fortunately, I've never had to make a claim.

I had one haggery representative indicate that Miatas weren't covered. A broker (haggerty branded) was able to get it insured. The policy includes driving for purely recreational purposes only. No driving to a store, work, etc.
they want you to have a seperate DD, a garage and would absolutely prefer that you don't drive it to work. They understand you may take it work here and there if there's an event after work you're attending though.
My cost through them is about the same as before, I pay $800 a year for $35k worth of coverage. Far more than many other people pay for the same coverage. When I called and asked them about it they said it was due to the amount of modifications from stock my car has. That the car would require large amounts of labor to fix and difficulty in finding parts. I'm not sure I agree with that but I'm getting three times the coverage for the same amount as before, so I can't really complain too much.
They have no issue with the welded rollbar, harnesses, LS conversion etc. I told them I track the car, they have no issue with that. Of course they won't cover it for any damage that occurs at the track though.
I also had painless experience using them for coverage on a 356. Pleasant, efficient, and they're knowledgeable enthusiasts. Coverage was like $400 a year for an agreed-value policy. It's the best deal in the hobby car universe.
In reply to patgizz:
About the trailer, they were actually fine with insuring my ’66 Mustang that was living in an enclosed car trailer for a year. That was with full disclosure about the arrangement and it was noted on my policy. The only requirement was that the trailer was locked. I don’t think they even mentioned hitch locks, but I had two styles to slow people down. I have since switched to the carrier I have all my other policies with, but always had good interactions with Hagerty on the phone. They did have to coach me on the fact that if I drove the car to work, I had to be going to get ice cream or something else fun afterwards.
someone should point out to them that "drive your classic to work day" IS fun
I spent this past summer working at Hagerty. Yes, they're an awesome company. Yes, they have a solid product. Yes, they are real car people.
Long story short, much of all this comes down to luck. It usually wouldn't, but lots of GRM favorites are on their "maybe" list. Call them, tell them your story, emphasize that your car is special and you'll treat it as such, and you'll probably be fine.
They are starting to write policies for cars in car ports or parking garages in low risk areas now, too.
They didn't bat an eye over my V8 Fiero a few years ago.
Old thread, but was linked recently.

I have to be the lowest value costumer ever insured by hagerties. They got a whopping $90 bucks from me and are treating me like a king with a hundred million dollar car collection. I can't recommend them enough.
All of the GRM crowd should check them out.
I don't know about that, the word of mouth first-person recommendation you're giving to a broad audience is pretty valuable.
