My friend and I are having a debate as to whether hotted up coil packs make any difference at all with a mostly stock engine. In this case, a Ford 4.6 in a P71.

I don't think they're going to make a lick of difference, unless the coils were faulty. He is expecting a pretty significant 10 or more horsepower from just the coils and a wider spark plug gap.

Then he brings these guys up: http://granatellimotorsports.com/products/1999_2010_Ford_4_6_5_4L_4V_Coil_On_Plug_Connectors_Only-91-23.html

Of course I call snake oil on those immediately. $150 for some "0 ohm" connectors. Nevermind that there's always some resistance at a terminal, and they use stainless steel which isn't a great conductor to begin with. You would think they would go the audiophool route and gold plate them, at least that will take care of any corrosion over time.

Am I not seeing the light and need to go upgrade all of the coils in all of my cars, or is this mostly a placebo effect, or wallet weight reduction, at work?

Snake oil like the $1,689.99 carbon fiber HDMI cable.

Are you guys referring to both the coil packs and the connectors, or just the connectors. This is a two parter, guys

Hahaha, unrelated but the reviews on that page are hilarious!

This always makes a P71 faster.

Other than eliminating the plug wires, what is the purpose of individual coils ?

Many stock coils only fire two cylinders..

In the case of this engine, it has one coil per cylinder. It allows more recovery time for the coil between firing.

I can see upgrading a single coil to a hotter coil, but not when each cylinder has its own.

Maybe in the lab they can show a hotter spark, but can you even feel 10 more horses on a P71?

More spark isn't going to do anything unless it's having trouble igniting the mixture. This is a 99% stock engine. IMO, more spark won't do anything, except when it becomes a weak link.

Aftermarket coils do nothing on a 2V mod motor. Those engines just don't respond to bolt-ons like coils, bigger throttle bodies, etc.

Add a supercharger and be done with it. Mod motors love boost.
