Installed a new accessory belt on the Festiva yesterday (along with a distributor o-ring). Everything seemed fine, then parked the car for a couple hours, started it again it made the WORST noise.

Is the belt not tight enough? It feels as tight as the old, worn belt, but the tension adjustment bolt isn't in the same location as before.

It's silent on idle, when revs increase it starts squealing like mad. My neighbors are gonna hate me when I leave in the early morning.

Seems to die-down when the engine gets warm.

Funny thing, in all my 15 years of working on cars, I've never done an accessory belt before! This car has no PS and this belt runs off the crank and what is probably the water pump.

Its alternator load.  Tighten the belt more.

Is there a trick to this? I pushed the alternator as far as I could with my hand, then tightened the bolts. Do I need someone else to push on it while I tighten things up?

Generally I use a pry bar and push the alternator a little further than I can with my hands and then tighten the bolts. And always check belt tension on the slack side.

Great, I'll try that. Thank you!

Alternator belts need to be slightly prybar tight, not hand tight.
