went to the Chicago Auto show last night.

Snapped photos of things I can't go see at my local dealer.

Mazda Brought a Cosmo

I thought that was pretty neat. I've never seen a Cosmo in person before. I never realized how small it was.

Subaru brought out this awesome Brat with a pop-up camper.

Also, Mazda had some cool merch in a display and these cards next to it to buy the gear and get a discount.

Did you see anything new (as in vehicle debuts) there ?

yes.

saw the new defender 110.

The 110 styling is on point and has some neat touches, the doors have metal wrapping around into the passenger cabin and it appears that the door panel attaches to the door with about a dozen torx screws. which sounds dumb until you realize it's supposed to be watertight and if what I saw is right, this will also make it easier to work on with all the fasteners being exposed.

MSRP starting at $50k. it's a nicer version of the wrangler.. reliability is going to be the test of how well these do. they're priced right and powerful packing 400hp.

also got to see the Type S concept.

I couldn't get a good angle of this thanks to the wooden fence.

But this is the Mercedes Metric with pop up camper conversion that Mercedes is supposedly going to sell at dealerships starting later this year.

right next to it was this crazy sprinter..

and the one I wanted to see.

Honda Premiered the new Boost Blue for the Civic Type R.

I played with the lighting focus on my crappy phone camera.

2020 Type R also now has 2 piece front rotors which I wanted to see up close.

I was in Chicago yesterday and drove right by the McCormick Center because we went to the Museum of Science and Industry. We didn't have time for the Auto Show. We were just in town for the day for a company event and now back home in NC.

Why does the D110 have a fanny pack?

I did of course skip over the C8.

I will say it looks far better in person than I expected. It doesn't look as long as it does In photos. I still think it's a bit too long. but the 3 dimensions of the rear bumper are a lot easier to see in person, at least to me.

Went tonight.  Lots of cars I couldn't fit into (370Z, Supra, Camaro, FR-S, Miata).

Buick and Cadillac was weak.  Acura was awesome.  I loved that Alfa until I saw the price. Nissan was the worst.  I'm surprised if they make it next year

Veloster N had more headroom than I thought and the non-sunroof Camaro wasn't bad to sit in

In reply to Datsun310Guy :

The veloster N pisses me off to a degree. Rest of the world gets the normal i30N and we get the veloster with less headroom in the backseat.

I sat in the Elantra GT and I fit great. Don't fit worth a damn in the back of the veloster.

Fellas; is it gay to want to lick every inch of the Mazda Cosmo?

Gotta appreciate getting discounts from Mazda for just seeing their booth- I love the company to death and I hope they pivot to a more "luxury" market well to make up for their recent shortfall.

The lighting alteration for the Honda I think looks a little better- stock blue 8/10 for me, altered 9/10, though it likely would be too close to the Ford Electric Blue on the Focus RS.

I think Acura needs to make that coupe, or something similar. Their cars have seriously fizzled here with low ratings for years and everything being an SUV; a "entry level" to the crown-jewel NSX might be a great idea for those whom are interested in that Hyperion but are (understandably) concerned of the supercar price and performance.

The civic type R in that shade of blue just doesnt seem to belong.  Looks like a good color, but just not right on a performance based honda

Do it! This is the first year in probably 10, maybe more that I won't be attending. Usually I go with my dad, for a long time we went with his dad too - I've probably been 23 times in my life. Fun day out. One of these days, I'm going to rent a tux and go the night before it opens with the doctors who cared for my daughter: https://www.chicagoautoshow.com/first-look-for-charity/

Some tips for bringing kids, even though I've never brought kids

  • If you can swing it on a weekday, it is a lot easier. A lot fewer people.
  • Taking the metra will add a fun part of the trip for the kiddos, but getting from Ogilvie or Union to McCormick Place inovlves and uber. Often cheaper to drive
  • If you drive, park in the McCormick Place parking lot and leave your coat in the car. If you take the train, bring a light fleece. Plan on  being cold while you're outside.
  • Bring a backpack that can hold all the kiddos coats, and yours if you're  bringing it. Coat check is expensive, and walking around that place gets hot.
  • Go in with a plan on which cars you want to see, and map it out.
  • Bring snacks and drinks, because it is freaking expensive eating there
  • We always made it a family event that included dinner or lunch afterwards. Maybe plan on that...

FTFY and no it's not, beautiful car.

Their goal is to be a lifestyle brand. they don't want to be luxury. but they can be different from their other mainstream Japanese counterparts by building unique cars that are well equipped, well prices and attractive while bringing a customer experience at the dealers better than your standard mainstream dealer.

the move is already working. the cars came first, and the dealers are being visually changed right now. with the company trying to weed out problem dealers.

I wish Honda could do the same with their dealer network. I did manage to find one that got me in and out of the dealer with a brand new car in less than an hour. The price was pre-negotiated but the 12 other Honda dealers I dealt with made me lose faith in humanity all over again.

Subaru seems to have a similar setup to their LA Auto Show touting their lifestyle brand as well and not even recognizing their performance cars. Just that connection to the outdoors, dogs, and environment.

1. I got there yesterday at 4:15pm.  Ghost town.  I hustled and was out in 3 hours.

2. I park in Lot B - $16.  You are correct to dress light and freeze.  Dragging coats  around sucks and is worst with kids.

3. $7.50 for a slice of Connies Cheese pizza?   I should stop on the way home and get an entire pizza but I don't need the calories.  We usually starve and reward ourselves at Portillo's on the way home.

By the time that Grandpa stopped going, sometime in his 70's, we (my brothers and I) were at the age where we were going to do it all. And so we did. And Dad was gung-ho to make it work, so we saw EVERYTHING. Took a whole day. Last  year, my dad, brother, mom, wife and I were in and out in about 90 minutes - we stopped at the ones we wanted to stop at, and that was it.

Robbie, if you have any friends who are salesmen, it is worth asking if they can give any tickets. Or just go and test drive a car, often times they'll give them away.

Also worth a note. Save a few bucks and install the Chicago auto show app

You can buy a ticket for $10.25 through the app. vs $13 online or $15 at the showm
