While competing in–and finishing–the Nürburgring 24 Hours can be equated to climbing a mountain, Hyundai is also interested in conquering a more literal mountain: Pikes Peak.

That's actually the sound that the TA Spec cars will have going up Pikes Peak. wink

The TA spec car is required to run 120db external speakers (for worker safety) that Hyundai will use to showcase the Ioniq 5's synthetic drivetrain noises. But, as I asked in the press conference "Your synthetic engine sounds are cool and all, but if you have access to a 120db sound system, why NOT Slayer?"

That front splitter is gigantic!

Hyundai is doing super cool things these days. They seem like a true enthusiast brand now. We just did a 1200 mile round trip in our Ioniq 6 and it was fantastic. Such a wonderful car.

That's a horny looking Hyundai. I'd love to know how many of those body mods are for aero and how many are for style - the opening on the back of the front fenders, for example.

A four car team is a serious effort. They cap the drivers at 85 or so, so Hyundai is a non-trivial percentage of the field.

The most important question isn't about aero or power (which I understand is what everyone likes to talk about) - it's; Did they do anything special to keep the pack (cells) cool?  None of the current crop of performance cars/sedans can do anything like a full Pike's run at the power numbers they quote as 'max' because the current state of the art cells that everyone is using can only do about 4C for the length of the climb which is way lower than everyone is spec'ing motors, inverters, axles etc.

Porsche is playing with power limitation to try to get theirs to last longer.  Lucid threw a gigantic (heavy) pack in theirs.  Tesla has the novel A/C based (pre) cooling system but they all fall short of something like Pike's.

With 88kWh and 500kw (670hp) that's about a 6C discharge...

Our teamPGR Plaid can do a 6C discharge for about 6-7 minutes on a normal 2.5mi track, but Pike's is worse because of the flat out sections at the bottom, and less air for cooling the higher you go.

All that TA aero might actually be worse for time because it requires more power for longer at the bottom which uses energy and generates heat.

That last bit is really interesting. Give up some downforce to maintain power longer - but you're also losing downforce as the aero loses efficiency so you might have trouble deploying the power you've maintained. And that aero helps maintain higher cornering speeds, which means you don't have to accelerate as much for a given average speed across a section and thus don't need as much cooling. That's probably what Porsche is thinking. It's a really interesting tradeoff.

That big splitter should help ram air through the front heat exchanger more, but without some sort of extraction I can't see it helping that much.

Ford is bringing a modified EV as well. They seem to have gone a little further.

The opening at the back of the front fenders is very reminiscent of how the TCR class cars have been developed.  I'd say it's functional aero/evacuating the air from the wheel well.
