Also, C + I can be charged under other statutes, and its entirely possible that your local municipality has written other city ordinances that might make it a "crime" or at least an infraction to hoon on private property. Long story short, dealing with cops is almost always a losing game. Don't hoon in front of them. Even if you can/do get the ticket tossed, is it really worth the moral victory for the GIANT PAIN IN THE ASS?

if nothing else be respectful if they arrive on the scene while you're do donuts ... try ( I realize it's hard for some of us ) not to be a smart ass when they ask you what you're doing ... be civil and respectful ... you'll get away with a lot more than if you run your mouth ... and I'm not talking about what you'd consider respectful .... more what the officer would think is respectful .... if nothing else don't be an ass ... things have a much greater chance of turning out for the better

I always treat officers with respect and try to be courteous. It starts from the moment you see the lights behind you. Slow down. Put your turn signal on. pull someplace they can safely pull over, even if it means driving forward a hundred yards. preferably brightly lit and far away from any lanes of travel. shut the car off. The less stress on the officer the greater the chance he will keep his cool. I do normally inquire why I was stopped, but honestly thats mostly because I'm an attorney and I've been stopped for E36 M3s and giggles before while they pulled over everyone on certain roads at a certain time of night (due to proximity to a bar that I am not a patron of). Don't rifle through glovebox or console looking for your registration and license, the officer would probably greatly prefer you wait until you asks for it. It seems to me that having registration and insurance in a place that appears you have given some thought and care to the issue seems to go a ways towards convincing a cop you aren't a meth head.

But, even I have had run ins with cops that went out of their way to look for a fight. I had a cop ask me to bring my insurance back to his cruiser while he ran my license. When I brought it back he unholstered his gun and said "you walk up on a cop like that, thats a good way to get yourself shot and arrested. Its illegal to get out of your vehicle during a traffic stop and I'd be within the law to shoot you for it AND haul you to jail afterwards. if I want you out, I'll TELL you to get out."
Obviously just an asshat who watched too many dramatic movies. (btw my "crime" was having a registration expired by 2 weeks). He also said that my truck (diesel excursion) looked too nice for me to be driving (I had been working on a project so was dressed in jeans and a dirty T shirt and boots). Basically just a giant douche who with every bit of body language and word out of his mouth was looking for an excuse to try and arrest me or hit me or both. Not sure why, again, didn't do anything to provoke him and was courteous to him during the entire stop (although when he told me he could shoot me for getting out of my vehicle, I did ask him if he really thought there was a law against that... I felt like I had to let him know that wasn't actually illegal and even if it was he couldn't legally shoot someone for it, just in case he really that that was the law). The best part is that my fiance is the prosecutor and she sat in the passenger seat during the entire stop. He clearly didn't recognize either of us and just treated us like a total dipE36 M3.
