I'm all for the BMW swap, if it's a grassroots effort. If BMW is giving you an engine and all the associated stuff, then helping you along the way, you'll be distancing yourself from your readers.

Didn't we have a big argument a while back about how the reader base isn't limited to the $20xx challenge fans? GRM could totally explain how someone could do this themselves, even as they get support from BMW.

I think I'd rather see the BMW swap. It's okay if they use new stuff, as long as they tell us where to source the same stuff used.

There's an excellent chance that I wouldn't build one of these cars with either of the engines anyway.

Yeah, that's been discussed many times over the years. There's no real way to define grassroots really, but you know it when you see it. Would I read an article about BMW giving them the stuff to do the swap, and all the technical support you or I would never get? Sure. Would it be as interesting as just about any build from just about any challenge entrant? No. Not to me at least.
I can totally see how some aren't interested in a LSX swap too. So, I don't envy the GRM folks. No wait. They have a cheap M3 that they could swap an LSX into, or a BMW V12 with the help of BMW. I absolutely envy the GRM folks haha.

I vote for a Lexus V8 and really piss off some purists.

Pick up another e36 and v8 swap both w/ the different motors. That'd be a GREAT read.

Along with a performance testing finale and cost summary...

It's really easy for us to sit out here in Internetland and condemn the Suddard family & friends to project car double hell, but... I have to say, bluej and secretariata have a VERY interesting concept here.

Bmw v8 swap would be wicked. Any of us can do a ls swap e36 bmw (cx racing makes a complete kit for crying out loud and its like 1500 LOL bucks!)

Now, a M5 motor into a M3??! Is that even possible? And how abso-berkeleying-lutely cool would that be?!

I absolutely love the M62 in my e39. It really is a great engine.

I once had a M60 in a 740iL that I was flipping, I drove it around the block more than a few times with no exhaust past the manifolds, it was pretty damned wicked sounding.
