My new to me Sequoia has nav, but I like using Waze on my phone. I'd like to have it on top of the dash somehow, but don't want a big bulky holder. If you have one you like, please share it!

I've got one that looks just like this one, works great! It's a magnetic base and you get several steel discs to mount on your devices. Very stable.
I have a NATO mount. I like it enough that I bought four of them. They work best if you can mount the base to a horzontal surface but it's not mandatory. They are magnetic.
I have a cheap magnetic I got from Amazon (uh, a Scosche). It's survived three or four autocrosses (in a nice, plush, stock Mini) without chucking the phone, even with the metal plate under a phone cover. I like the *idea* of the firmness of a clamp more, but I can't argue with the results, and all the best clamp types don't seem to have a range that covers the differences between the current his and hers phones.
Get in, set the phone where it goes, pick it up and get out. One hand, no fiddling.
I have an Aukey vent mounted magnet. Not on the dash, but similar to what others have posted. works great, only massive potholes not avoided on a long road trip have knocked the phone loose.
I wonder if there's a way to convert in-dash navs into Bluetooth displays for your phone...
I have one of these from Walmart.
It seems to work well. I prefer the nav to be higher and off-center to my line of sight rather than down on the dash where I have to take my eyes off the road to look at it.
Another vote for a magnetic mount. I bought a cheap one from Amazon and it worked so well that I bought more to outfit my whole fleet.
Magnetic mounts from orielleys. 12 bucks, and very adjustable. I love them. I forget the brand. White box, parts are black and green.
Only had a phone fall once, but the potholebent the rim at the same time.
I'm having a lot of trouble finding a decent mount. For my car, the best mount position-wise would be a vent mount. I have a TomTom mount that I like, except it keeps falling out of the vents. Looks like this:
The plastic clips that slide into the vent shutters don't hold too well and slip out on bumps and hard corners. In addition to that, the big part that holds the phone doesn't really clip into the vent part; it just sorta hangs out there. As a result, it tends to fall off. Last time it fell off, it broke a little, adding insult to injury.
I got so annoyed with it last weekend that I tried out one of these ones:
The rubberized part that slips into the vent is nice and stays in the vent, but the ball-and-socket adjustment never gets tight enough and with panoramic view it just flops around.
I wish someone made the first style I posted with the rubberized vent mount arm like the second one.
Cheap Chinese windshield suction cup mounts with a grip mount for the phone will do the job for regular street driving, but there's some technique involved in setting them up. I used to use one for offroading but the phone would fall out every now and then, after the first time I put a wrist strap on the phone's case as a safety tether. For offroad use, Ram mounts are the best.
Heavy duty Velcro that they give away with the toll transponders. I always ask for a couple extra when ever I am at one of there service places. One piece stuck to the back of my phone case and the other to where I want the phone to be on my dash. Works great and is free
Also known as 3M Dual Lock and available at most retailers (often easier than finding an EZ-Pass outlet).
I run a RAM X-Grip mount to hold my phone for navigation in my boat : https://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-B-138-UN7U
It's ridiculously stable even jumping wakes. You can option them with different bases and i'm seriously considering the suction cup version for my truck.
I took one of these and jb -welded it onto a ram mount B diamond plate.
then I just added the appropriate ram - B pieces i needed
suction cup mount 3 inch arm double ball another 3 inch arm and "phone adapter"
I already had an "inventment" in ram peices.
I also buy them on ebay whenever I see a cheap used pieces
