It turns out I've had a real soft spot for these for years. The original CRX. If I'd lived in a movie and received a new car for my 16th birthday, I probably would have wanted it to be one of these. My uncle had one and I drove it shortly after getting my license. A flight attendant I worked with had one and worked on it herself. And I loved the twin-engined CRX built by Car and Driver years ago.
So when I came across this little gem, I fell hard. I mean, look at it! So cute!
Other than being blue instead of red, it was the mental picture I had in my head. And that mental picture quickly accepted the blue. The contrasting trim, the non-flush headlight - that's what they're supposed to look like to me.
1985 Si with a fantastic shell. No cracks in the plastic nose or fenders. No rust around the windshield or wheel wells. Stock interior other than a low-key modern head unit. Some of the panels have been repainted and not that well, such as the LF fender and nose as they were replaced due to the cracking. I can't find any actual accident damage though. Needs a wax job on the hood.
Mechanically, it has KYB shocks, larger front brakes from a later CRX and that's all. It's as Honda designed it. The owner is a younger kid with real respect and he took care of it.
It just delivered the owner from Georgia to Salt Lake City. I picked it up there yesterday and towed it home. These pics are from the ad, I'll post my own tomorrow after we spend a bit of bonding time.
Funny thing - between the time that I saw the ad and the seller got the title sent out from GA, I saw a twin to this car parked in front of a hotel in Grand Junction. It's the first one I've seen in the wild in years.
Plans are to drive it and fettle it. It'll just be a fun car to drive, not a high performance monster, so no modifications are planned at this time. I've got a set of factory manuals and wiring diagram on the way so I can take proper care of it.
So, when does flyincrx.com get registered?
People ask that every time one of us buys a new car. Old and new Minis, BMW 2002s, Westfalia campers...
Oscar Jackson is a friend of mine. He's jealous. If I need to hop it up, I know who to talk to.
Sweet score. I love how you said "It turns out you've had a sweet spot for these for years". I was a teen when that C&D article was published and I kept the magazine for many years (sadly it was lost in a fire). This one looks incredibly well kept for a nearly 30 year old Honda. The cosmetic flaws are no big deal, if the car is solid, that's awesome!! Out of curiousity, how many miles does it have?
That does look pretty clean. Great score.
I haven't seen a clean first-gen in awhile. Even the ricer types have abandoned them here in favour of the second-gen.
Still a really great car, and a first gen Si has gotta be getting rare nowadays. I hope you have a ton of fun with it.
Awsome find! I even prefer the blue 85's myself. Never owned an Si, but had a red 84 base model with the 1.3 and would love to have it back other than it was rough when I owned it in the early 90's...I believe I still have the Car and Driver article somewhere in the shop.

You could have posted this 15 years ago and still have been correct.
Very nice find! I've owned two 86 SIs. One was in VGC when I got it. Even the AC worked. It was quicker than I expected it to be.
Nice!
Too bad you're not closer. I'd give you lots of correctly colored spare parts and hope you'd never need them.

So very cool, and truly a dying breed.
I had an '89 CRX Si that was in pristine condition with around 120k on the clock. I LOVED that car. The oldschool dash, the rev-happy nature of the D16, the nimbleness of it, the 40+ mpg. Car was awesome.
You live in Utah Keith? Thats where I'm living right now.
The AC on this one has a leak, but we have an AC machine. I will prevail!
Mileage is 141,000 miles. Plates are acquired. It's going to be a fun evening.
I have very quickly discovered that this is one of those cars that is universally loved by gearheads, and that a high percentage of us have owned one in the past and regretted selling it. I think the only other car that's generated this number of stories was either the old Land Rover (mostly from Brits), the Mini (again...) and the old Cadillac. The thing they all have in common is that they're totally non-threatening.
If this thing catches your fancy, don't forget that Boxhead Tim has one for sale.
I don't live in Utah, but I can see it from my house. I'm in Grand Junction, CO. It's worth driving to SLC for a car like this. It's not like I drove through any populated areas to get there!
I had an 85 Si years ago, I miss it to this day. Looks awesome.

I do travel around the country quite a bit
Ah....reminds me of my dad, who in his early 60's, had one of these back in the late 80's. He LOVED it.
That's an awesome buy. For a second, I thought you'd bought Boxhead Tim's car.
Hey, I used to have a first gen SI as well! Rust claimed it. I sold it on running but it was getting so bad. What a great little car though!

I was considering it and talking to him, but I'd been working on this one before BT's came up. This one just kinda pushed more of my particular buttons.
If I didn't live over the biggest salt deposit in North America I'd grab my screaming bright green '91 CRX-B from my mom's back yard in an instant.

Fix the A/C and flip it. To me. Greyhound to Grand Junction in 6 hours. Tell me when to book my ticket.
<thread hijack>
You could travel north instead and buy mine, that one is for sale.

I still see them quite a bit in the PNW, but they dont rust out here they sure do get beat to crap. There is a super ratty ~85 Si I see in downtown seattle with Mugen CF 48 wheels
EvanR, you can't have mine. Buy BT's.
