Whats that? You want a diesel in your small chevy pickup? Its simple...youre only an easy, custom made, one off, CNC'd bellhousing away!

You mean someone hasn't 4BT swapped one yet???
VW ALH TDI swaps have been making their way into small trucks for awhile along with 4BT's. :)
...and yes from what's reported on TTAC, the Cruze Diesel will only be offered with an automatic.
Unlike the typical fanboi banter about wanting a diesel stick, since this is squarely positioned against the Jetta TDI, it should be noted the take rate for manual trans VW TDI's is something like 50%. They would have been wise to offer this with a 3rd pedal. Yes industry wide the take rate on a manual trans is something like 3%, but in the niche that is modern turbo diesel vehicles, manual transmissions are alive and well.
It would be neat to see this engine amortized across multiple vehicles though. A TDI in something like a Colorado would be competing with nothing but itself in the segment, and the engine is already federalized for use here now.
I'm tempted to TDI my mazda2 after warranty ends. Imagine a golf with 500lbs less and no MPG killin emissions. prob get 50mpg easy.

My only problem really with the auto is what it started off as, a 6T40. Those trans in the old 4spd flavor are POFS's.
If you trust Wikipedia, I wonder what a Euro/AUS 5spd would cost?

FWIW, the emissions controls on my '03 TDI are barely worth mentioning and often removing them reduces fuel mileage. Granted, even with a barely functioning EGR valve and 300+K of wear, I still get 50 mpg often.
I agree about the manual thing. VW are so frreakin cheap these days you know they wouldn't offer a manual if they weren't selling.

It is, but they are probably only offering it on the 2LT, AKA-Luxobarge, package, since those models are already 22-23k....
Why can't GM ever make a fully competent decision? I think it's great that they are offering this car here, but it's a huge mistake not offering it with the manual.
From what I've read, the manual transmission thrives among VW TDI buyers as well as Cruze Eco buyers. I've even read that manual-equipped sales have trended upward among these buyers in the past few years. Most people that buy TD cars are not your regular appliance car buyer; they are informed car people that like having the manual as a method of squeezing as much power and mileage out of these cars as they can. It looks like they are trying to siphon sales off of BMW 335D and Mercedes E-Class Bluetec buyers, which is obviously not going to happen.
I want GM to succeed, but when they keep making decisions like this...
Stick sales in general are at a double take rate in 2012 compared to what the talking heads thought they would be. Buncha idiots!
Whenever I hear talking heads speaking about transmissions, it seems like they always dismiss the manual out of hand. Quick to talk about the "new automatics" out ther that are incredible, with 8 speeds, getting better mpg, and the like.
As if those transmissions are available on cars like this. I'd much rather row my own than be stuck with a sucktastic CVT or the like.
I was considering a Freedom Drive II Jeep Patriot. Good mpg, 4wd, ground clearance, interior space, etc. Oh, but CVT-only. Ditto Juke AWD.
At least Mazda still seems to have some sense.
hey, it took a little while for them to bring the diesel, maybe the manual will follow in a year or two
... says the optimist
kudos GM

I think of this when I hear talking heads
Tom Suddard wrote: Cool! But where's my diesel Colorado?
Colorado is DOA after 2014. New truck coming from a 'world platform'. Not sure if diesel will be part of the US package though. (you know other markets will surely have it)
The problem is the Cruz Eco is $17k, 42mpg highway and comes with a stick. I will always applaud introducing new diesels to the states, but this could have been executed much better.

They will do this, and then scrap the diesel option and any other diesels (outside of HD pickups) and point to slow sales as an indicator the public doesn't want diesels.
Is this one of those cases where car guys say "If they make XYZ I will stand in line and buy two" but when it comes out it doesnt sell for a variety of reasons. Then everybody complains because there are not enough used ones available on the market. Then it becomes a Unicorn car and people flock to the interwebs claiming "If they make a NEW car XYZ I will stand in line to buy two" while posting pictures of Fry shaking a handful of money?
Or is this just a case of pulling a GM?
