Are these JDM cars that are hacked in half wrecked, or just "too old for Japan"?

Hard to tell. All the halfcuts I've seen here in Canada run fine, but that's no indication they haven't been rear-ended.

They might not have been wrecked. A lot comes down to shipping cost, shipping a front clip is much more cost effective than shipping a whole car.

legals too.. half cars are no longer a car.. so the DOT does not get involved

^ this

If it isn't older than 25 years then it can't come in complete. You can thank the company that imported those R34s for that.

It could be a real one. The amount of REAL, DOCUMENTED 555's we have in Canada is quite crazy.

And a front clip cut is definitely the way you want to go for a JDM to USDM swap. A 555 front clip will have no more value than any other realistically, as it probably was in an accident that made it not worth to sell.
