I work with P-cars (odd ones at that), and we have only ever had two 928s in our shop...
Most of them seem to be coming from Japan these days. Beware rotten fuel.
928s are hard to find? There are two in my neighborhood, and I don't live in particularly swanky surroundings.
Meeting the OP's specific criteria is a different story. Good luck with your search - the right car is out there but you have to be patient.

You are not stupid!!!! If you have ever driven a 928s4 / gts etc standard car you will completely understand!!!. Probably one of the best GT cars ever built. Understand that new these cars were 65-80K. You are purchasing a supercar. I was/am on the chase for a 87 s4 but I can not get the current owner to sell. The car has been in storage for more than 15 years and will need a complete going through but I want it!!!! The bad is that her now deceased husband gave it to her back in 1986 as a gift so the sentimental value is what is holding things up. Meanwhile the car is just sitting. It is a case where nothing is broken and it has no rust. It is just simple replacement of the belts hoses and what not. Then carefully bring it back to life. I have experience working on these cars. I have brought several back to life over the years so I know it is a process that will cost many thousands of dollars but in the end you have a fantastic car that will just eat up the highway miles and still be civil around town. Nothing is really all that hard to repair on these cars. Yes you have to take allot of things apart and yes parts can get pricey but it really is not much worse than any other high end car. This is not a ford / Chevy don't expect there pricing structure. I have told many that if you can not afford the parts don't purchase the car. The bad thing is that these cars have been getting cheaper to the point where people will by them and drive them till they brake. Then the cost to have them repaired is exceeding 30-40 percent of the vehicle cost many people will just junk them. This is the beginning of the end of many cars (I have seen it with the 944's as well) However with a car that had a much limited production run it will rapidly deplete the running stock.
"Back in the day" I did 190 MPH in a 87S4 and the car still wanted to go. I ran out of room. Porsche was VERY conservative with the ratings on these cars both the HP and the max speed were grossly under rated. The car I did this in is the car that I am trying to get my hands on that I noted above.
Get one. Get the best one you can afford. They are great cars that will make you smile.
Do it. I miss my 928S4 5 speed desperately.

You're just too excited to type I guess! I almost pointed you to that one instead of the silver but the silver was much less money. Interestingly you can see that the blue car was sold from a listing price of $59k in May and is now being offered for $79k - I could have sworn it was $69k yesterday; I'll have to check my cache to see if I can pull it out. Just something to keep in mind if/when you decide to make an offer. That also says that they are a true collectable at this point and will only appreciate in value so long as you keep the miles down.

You sir, are bloody insane. The car is unquestionably fast, cool, 80s chic and all that but... $80k? That is the kinda price for a 928 that will get you an extra long sleeve jacket and electric shock treatments.

I'm milquetoast on the 928. I've been in one - its one of the fastest V8 race cars I've ever had a lap of the Glen in but my insanity lies in lighter, more nimble foolishness.

well if he gets it for 60k he can have his awesome GT and get him a little bit of light, nimble, foolishness to go with it. Nothing wrong with having your cake and eating it too.
