It's an Opel GT. Sold by Buick dealers who had no idea what to do with it.

Very cool. They don't come up very often.

My 11 year old son is obsessed with them. He thinks we should start shopping for one. A friend of mine during college had one. It was a dead sexy little car.

I see one around Ithaca occasionally. It's painted a pretty awful pearl white with a wing on the back.

There was a white one for 15 years just sitting in a driveway near the center of town. I was 5 or so when I first noticed it and though it was a Corvette until my older brother told me it was an Opel.

My dad had one briefly in college. There was a reason that it was a brief ownership.

I'd really like one, personally.

My dad has 2. One has been in his garage since 1981, the other "parts car" has been outside the garage since 1992. 1/2 the attic is taken up with parts from both cars. We have planned, at least 3 times in the past decade, to get one running but other obligations get in the way. At this point I plan on inheriting them as is, after I build a garage to house them. He bought his first in 1979, then sold it when we moved across the country.

The ramp up of the $2014 Challenge has me day dreaming of them again, actually. Maybe $2015 or $2016. I'd take the parts car and make a competition car out of it, then do a nice resto-mod on the garage kept one. They rust if you look at them wrong, especially the belly pan where the battery lives. There is a very active Opel forum and parts are readily available.

One of friends bought one when we were in college in the late 70s to use as a winter beater. His regular daily driver was a 1970 GTO Judge...of course, back then both of them were just old used cars. I drove the Opel a couple times, it wasn't very good in the snow.

I would love one with a v6 swap. Got to ride in one that had a 3800 in it and it was just hilarious.

I have to agree - I've never been a fan of these but that one certainly clicks all the right boxes.

The Opel I am enamored of is a similarly tarted up Manta.

I love the little things, but the reason you've never seen one is that they can actually rust from the top down.

The only ones that I ever see these days are either perfect show cars or they are disappearing into the earth under a tarp. There seems to be no middle ground with these cars. They're like steel Europas.

There is one in my neighborhood that I see occasionally. They look cool and seem really fun with a 3.8L in it.

Used to see them a lot 35 years ago. Not so much today. Last one I saw was at the dragstrip, sadly butchered and running some sort of American V8 power.

Way back in the late eighties we used to pass two sitting along a fence line on a farm in southern Indiana. Over a period of ten years I never seen them move but they never seemed to be deteriorating. I have wanted one since then.

My son thinks the drive train from a turbo Solstice would be just about perfect. It's hard to argue with him.
