Not much to say other than if I stumbled on one I would be tempted.
AFAIK, they weren't sold in the US. Actually I'm pretty sure they weren't.
EDIT: I looked it up and supposedly they were, I've never seen one.
They look good though. I don't understand what the problem was with them. They seemed like they were descent.
I have never seen a Jaguar wagon anywhere in person. I probably buy it if I did especially the older ones.
I have seen one, and only one in SE Michigan over the years. Very few were sold, I guess, but I like it.
I have seen one up close and in person, and have spoken to its owner. IIRC they were only in the US market for 1 year.

Yep, they were. I've seen 2 or 3. I have no real interest in an overpriced Mondeo, but I could be tempted by an overpriced Mondeo wagon.
X-types are terrible, terrible cars. I wish they weren't simply because of the depreciation, but they are.
The wonderful driving dynamics of a Ford Contour with old Jaguar build quality.
Just type "Jaguar X-type" into Google and enjoy the first few results.

Lol-apparently directly to Jaguar owner's hell!
So the next question is why are they junk. Or is it a case that it is a good ford but that same standard makes it a poor Jag?

I take it you've never driven a Contour, absolutly brilliant cars.
Oh, and like most internet 'lore' the two people I've know who owned X types loved them and had zero issues with them. There's a wagon that lives about 2 streets over from me, but I don't know the owner.

Hahahah. Oh, I've driven many a Contour. SVT aside, they might be 'brilliant' when compared to a Tempo, sure. Otherwise just another bland domestic midsize with so-so handling and power trains. My GF and I test drove a V6 5-speed and bought a Neon instead if that tells you much.

Build quality on early models (pre-2004) is absolutely atrocious, bad enough for Edmunds to call Jaguar out on it in their reviews. Stupid crap; dashboard trim falls off, trunk latches that stick, windows that don't open, radios that come and go, doors that require messing with the handle to open, etc. Automatic transmissions have a tendency to self destruct as well, as soon as 60k or earlier.
Just check out some of the reviews on carsurvey: http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/jaguar/x-type/2002/single-page/
From everything I've heard, it's a Ford Contour with a ton of extra luxury stuff that will quit working very quickly...so you might as well just buy a Contour. They also had a HUGE wave of recalls and TSBs after release, for the transmission and other things. Magazine reviews have never been great either. Avoid, avoid, avoid...
I was seriously considering buying a new X Type when they came out. The idea of a four door Jag with all wheel drive and a stick was appealing. When I walked into the dealership and told the sales manager that I wanted a five speed, he practically did a back flip. He gave me the keys to a British Racing Green car with cream colored interior and told me to keep it for the day. Right off the bat, he told me he'd knock six grand off the MSRP. I guess there weren't too many people asking for sticks.
Unfortuneatly, I hated driving the thing. The pedals in particular stand out as being particularly annoying. And I think the switches seems cheesy as well. I gave him the keys back, thanked him and bought a WRX.
The Jag had a lot of the parts that the SVT and ST200 had, as well as AWD and a larger engine with more power than the SVT Contour. After the first year or so, teh quality was pretty good, as well, plus all the luxury trappings of the Jag vs a Contour. They are pretty cheap now, and you can do all the things that SVT owners tend to do, liek suspension upgrades, and turbo kits for even more power (the 3 liter X types used the block that the SVT guys upgrade to to make 300-400 hp)
An AWD 3 liter turbo wagon would be a cool driver.

This was exactly what I was thinking. I also think that although the early cars seem to have issues that most of them have probably been recycled. As for the remaining wouldn't most of the defects have already either been addressed?
I have no particular love for this car other than I like the look better than many of the other generic mid size car's / wagons.
My wife has one and loves it, but bought it used for cheap. i could not see getting one of these new for that kind of money...It did recently need about 2k of work done, ig. coils, valvecover gaskets, S belt, and a few other things. But since it has dern near 300k miles, it gets a pass. It's still a pretty nice car.
I think the estate looks better than the sedan too! holy cow I never thought I'd say something like that...
damn you all. now im looking at jags on craigslist.
first the subaru, then the neon, now jags.....
i love this place!!!
wonder what kind of milage these things get with the six and AWD?
What would be cool is to put a subi driveline under it. Trim falling off and little stuff like that is anoying but far from a deal braker. How about the motor and trans. Jag trans seem to be week but is it just a ford under there how bad can it be.

This is a mystery to me. I loved mine. Yes it’s an older platform from around 1990, but I honestly felt my SVT was a great handling car. I did several track days in it too. One was at Grattan which I hadn’t driven for 4-5 years so I asked for an instructor. The guy I got was an IT Driver who’d one his class the previous weekend in his CRX. He was also really impressed with the car (Bone stock SVT ) in fact he felt it put down the power better than his IT car coming off the hairpin at the bottom of the circuit despite the face I had no LSD and his car did. The seats were also great. My biggest gripe on the car was the monotone interior, every single thing was the same color, no contrast to brighten it up. I think the Jag was a big big step up (as it should have been) and better than an E36 (the plastic fantastic), but not as good as an E46.
X type Plastic E36
