I set aside $20k for a new car, haven't done this in decades. After my Ranger got blasted in the parking lot I decided to buy a $10k driver and call it a day, you just can't have nice things....
I hate Stealerships! The local VW hawker has a 2009 Jetta with 37,000 miles on it. It's a 2.5 litre inline 5 with a 5 speed stick. He's asking $14,480.
First, what's the skinny on the 2.5 engine, sounds Audi to me. What to look out for?
Second, if I walked in with 120 or 130, $100 bills would they jump?
Advice, guidance, opinions, smart remarks, sidelong glances are all welcome.
Dan
If you like the Inline 5's. Fuel Economy of a 6, performance of a 4. More or less their economy engine.
What are your requirements? Would a slightly older TDI fit the bill? I think those will hold their value better, run longer, and get better mileage.
Value's not in the equasion. I need a stick and four doors.
Dan
Other than bad fuel economy, I haven't heard much about them.

My wife has a 2010 Golf Wagon with the 2.5 and an autobox - (its her car and she insisted that she didn't want a stick again). Anyway I find the power decent compared against the 1.8T in our old Passat. Upside - it has a timing chain, not a belt.
I believe that the 2.5 is basically the old 2.0 4-banger with an extra cylinder grafted on, but I am not sure about that.
We have only had it since Sept., but we haven't found the economy to be that bad, however my wife has a heavy foot and she was driving our Explorer (which I now drive) and so she was always hard on fuel.

I don't think that's true. I'm pretty sure the 2.5L is a four valve per cyl. engine, and doesn't really share much if anything from the 2.0L. I don't really have much experience with them, but the MIL has an '06 that she bought new, and has had zero problems with it.
I left work a bit early and went to see it. Nice. Wifey and I went for a scoot, rode well, has all the junk you could ever want, two cup holders and new sneakers. I'll take it. Automatics are more desirable i.e. more gita; I got this one for $14,500.
I'm happy, more importantly SWMBO is happy.
Next order of business:
Eibach springs and new wheels before she memorizes what it looks like.
I'm open to new wheel ideas, the steelies on there now will be relagated to winter duty.
Thanx, Dan
How would these look on a Jetta?
I think you should get something so JDM it hurts...

Depends on the dealer. If they are hurting for cash, then good chance of it. If they are not, then no, probably won't help you too much. Never hurts to try though.
Congrats on the new dub - since the car color is silver, wheel color will define the car. I'll skip right over the obvious and go right to chocolate or cranberry mesh with a polished lip.
The 2.5l will get about 31mpg hwy with a manual. They are decent cars with a few minor flaws.
Flaw 1: They are built by Messicans paid by VW :)
Flaw 2: They are built by VW in Messyco :D
Flaw 3: I would own one.

Is that possible with a Dub?
Wheel ideas? How about stock Dub or Audi?
Look for a set of aftermarket S4 wheels in 17 or 18" 17s use 235/45r17, 18s use 225/40r18
eBay for you.
More eBay for you.
The new sneakers are 16", rather use them on a new wheel than toss 'em and go for 17 -19s.

Good to know thanks! I knew they were a 20V, but I thought the block might be similar.
Wait - they were asking 14,480 and you paid 14,500? That's some serious negotiating skills!

A friend of mine had a newer of the Jetta body style a couple years ago and I drove it a few times. It had a good power band for driving around town but ran out of steam at a hair under 5k. The shifter had a good feel and it was a solid cruising car around time. I don't think I would go any bigger than a 17 inch wheel personally but ymmv.
I'm not much of a sedan person but the new redesigned Jetta looks pretty darn good..
