Believe it or not, a kid at my HIGH SCHOOL made an operating wankel as his senior machine shop project. The rest of us were making such sophisticated pieces as plumb bobs, so we were pretty well in awe.

This one is far slicker though. Sweet!

Racing Beat has already come out with aluminum replacements for the stock 'irons'. http://www.mazdatrix.com/engpartrace.htm

They can be 'stacked' to build a 20B just like the stockers.

And while this is old news, don't forget that Mazdatrix is working on titanium rotors:

Man you guys are making me want to dabble in rotary engines again. Anyone know the RPM range they are dreaming of with those titanium rotors?

titanium is a weird metal. Not only is it strong and light.. but it more flexible than steel and aluminum

It also has galling issues. How that works with apex and side seals sliding in and out I don't know. Coatings?

WRT Titanium rotors: This is the latest update from Mazdatrix, as of 6/14/2012:

http://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php?p=4286333&postcount=46

Mazdatrix said: "Test engine FINALLY being assembled with our Titanium Rotors! We were "down" for many weeks while we made new rotor gears. The first set were warped in heat treating. These new gears have EDM'd teeth - came out great. Please remember this whole project is VERY experimental. It may be 2 weeks before the engine is on the dyno as we have a crazy week scheduled for next week. We will keep everyone informed as we progress, and have the time to post here."

And, it loses comparatively little strength when it gets hot.

Titanium like stainless steel mostly has galling problems when it is in contact with itself. If it runs against dissimilar metals I dont see it as being too bad.
