I finally finished a valve adjustment and tune up on my 1982 Porsche 911sc. Such an awesome feeling. The 3.0 runs so much quieter and smoother. I know it is basic maintenance, but it is damn satisfying to know that I can do it.

I know it's not a Porsche but I always enjoyed doing the valve adjustments on my BMW E21's. There is something very satisfying about it.

There are some tricks to doing valve adjustments on 911s and 914s, mostly involving having a joint between your wrist and your elbow, but some tricks work for people with original equipment arms too. How many and how out of spec on the valves, any tight ones?

Most were out of spec. I encountered more tight than loose valves. I struggled most with tightening the damn lock nut without moving the set screw. The car looked like it had one head that was newer (looked cleaner) than the other and the lock nuts on the new head all gave me trouble.
I started off using the standard method but became very frustrated and used the back-side method which was much easier. To be honest, I am not terribly excited about doing a 911 valve adjustment again anytime soon.

Cadillac valves don't need adjustment.

Backside is definitely the way to go. Their is a way to do them on the 914 that is a bit complicated to me, and did not save me any time over the standard way, but I have small hands
