I'm not really hating on the car as much as I"m hating on the big deal in the commercial about the driver shifting a regular 'ol automatic shift lever into "Drive." Not showing paddles, or clutch, or someone rowing through gears like most "sportscar" ads show.

That's funny. I've just joined my local Scion club, and it's nothing but TCs and FR-Ss. I have the only xB1

Myself and another guy are the last xB1's. Quite a few brand new xB2's, and a girl with an xD actually. She's about 20 and probably has the highest amount of enthusiasm of the majority of the club.

It may be that TC sales are down while the FR-S is selling as well as expected already.

tC weighs 3k and has 170hp? It didn't work for the Tiburon, why is it going to work for hte tC? Oh.. wait.... they're both "chick cars". I don't think I've seen a Tib or tC driven in the last 2 months by a male.

I'd love a tC as a daily driver.

But what do i know about which cars are chick cars and which aren't.

It isn't bad. I mean it isn't the best but it is better then a lot of cars on the market now.

I have not driven it, but have driven the Camry SE and it was a decent drive. Often see low mileage '12-13 models with a stick selling for $15k. For that price it seems like a decent DD. It even has a decent sized hatch for lugging stuff.

FWIW, the Tc has been updated with the hideously ugly fish mouth "grille" that proves that Toyota doesn't care about it's customers.

Ugh. Puke. Bleh.

I've driven a couple 1st gens and honestly rather enjoyed them.

Enjoyed it for what it was, that is. I'd never build an autocross car out of one or anything, but it makes for a nice street car/daily driver as far as i'm concerned.

I'd do some suspension work, but i'd do that with pretty much any car, ever.

Exactly. I mean the interior is pretty decent. The seats are awesome. It drives decently. I think it could be a decent street car. I wouldn't buy it but it certainly isn't really worth all the criticism on here.

I want one!

I like xb2s but god damn are xDs HIDEOUS. I liked the xA waaaaay better, and would actually like to own one if not for the goofy resale value keeping me out.

Does anyone else see the TC as the new Tercel?

HECK NO! There's no way you're getting 40mpg out of a TC.

tC weighs 3k and has 170hp? It didn't work for the Tiburon, why is it going to work for hte tC? Oh.. wait.... they're both "chick cars"

Excuse me? The Tiburon was competitively speedy in its segment then, and even now. 170hp and 3k lbs is totally reasonable. Frankly, v6 tiburons and TCs are not much slower than the FRSBRZ. I guess that's not working either?

FWIW, the Tc has been updated with the hideously ugly fish mouth "grille" that proves that Toyota doesn't care about it's customers.

Wow.. that's bad.

I really don't get the catfish grill look. Just exactly who decided this should be the new be all and end all of car design? I think I actually liked the Mazda smiley face obsession better.

At least the beltline is level...all the swooping lines you see on cars new today end up reducing the rear window to the size of a shoebox lid...Drives me crazy. If I were in the market, Id rattle bomb the grille to match the car, and move on. Seems like a decent car for the cash to me...

I never thought Id see the day when a Japanese manufacturer, turning out 4 cylinder spo-com coupes, bordering on 200 ponies from the factory, with a select-it-yourself gearbox, would be flame bait round these parts

Then again, reading any posts in a thread about anything even remotely sporty found in GM's lineup these days shouldve prepared me for this thread. I consider myself warned...

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Toyota has very good Designers/Engineers/Marketers. They build a vehicle that is or is nearly the best at whatever it is for. That is the definition of good design. It's just right now what they are designing for is not things that most GRM people are interested in. Seems every 5 years or so Toyota comes out with something that rocks our socks (MK1 MR2, All-trac's, FX-16, MK2 MR2, Supra (all), 2000 Celica, MR-S, IS300, LS-F, LS-A, Scion XB, FRS, Xrunner, FJ cruiser). You don't just build a Camry and then have the same guys build the MR-S and have that good of a result. Enthusiasts and "car" people must exist within Toyota and every now and then they get allowed to play. If building the best beige mobile possible enables Toyota to drop these kind of Bombshells on the enthusiast community I'm all in to that plan.

nocones,

an interesting theory about Toyota, but it begs the question: if Ford, a smaller car company (which once built the #1 selling sedan) can field 3 or 4 sporty cars....and still make a profit, why is it the much bigger empire of Toyota struggles to produce small cars, not just sporty small cars? Nearly every Toyota product powered by a 4 cylinder engine is reliable AND boring, to look at and to drive while every other car company is passing Toyota in engineering (Corollas, xBs and xDs and Matrixes with 4 speed automatic transmissions?) and styling and pretty much matches them (in the real world) with reliability.

Oh, wait, I forget, 99% of Toyotas (repeat?) customers prefer reliability to EVERY other facet of car design. Why Toyota bothers to offer cars in colors other than white, grey, or beige is beyond me....I doubt their owners care what their cars look like / what color they are.

In Toyota's defense, nearly every car company has good-great periods and then doesn't. Ford hasn't always been such a hot car company (ala the Mustang II ) but you have to wonder if Toyota is way too conservative.

you've just described "most toyotas"

Which are not criticized for being bad cars. They're just criticized for not being very much fun.

but just to pile on:

Scion design team: "hey guys, how many different shapes and angles can we use in a 1-square-meter area on this new design? The kids these days like lots of extreme angles, right?"

refresh my memory: is the XRunner the pickup that is like the new Toyota version of the old Chevy S10 EXTREME pickup that came in bright yellow with a gaudy body kit on it?

Or is the XRunner something like the "Urban Runner" version of the 4Runner?

But the tC drives much better then the rest of the cars (that I have driven) in Toyota's current lineup. I don't think it will tear up the race track but it can be fun on the road and gets decent gas mileage and it fairly practical.

It's the former, a toyota pickup with what i consider a decent looking body kit that is both fairly quick and fairly good-handling. That 4.0 motor is one of my favorite motors i havent owned yet. Comparing it to an s-10 xtreme would be like comparing a 2006 SRT-10 pickup to a 1994 5.8L Lightning, similar in concept and worlds apart in execution and performance.
