I think it's a good "see how things have improved since then?" statement as much as anything. And honestly, in 1998, GM didn't exactly rock people's socks off in the styling department. Some might say reliability as well although that's an entirely different argument that I don't want to start.

Someone looked at an Aztec and thought, "I can do worse than that."

it definatly seems like GM can't get away from the Aztek... but like said above, that was 14 years ago and probably a reason why GM did go bankrupt.. the new GM is company with much better offerings today.. if anything the Bankruptcy and bailout actually did the company wonders for allowing them to eject a lot of the stuff they were saddled with from the past (shame they could not have kept saab going though)

I must say though.. I LIKE the dashboard

Maybe they should start selling some straight axle drag cars - that is the shizzle right there.

I gotta say I'd rock it, but I like weird stuff.

Come on now, 6spd M/T, 42+ MPG, super well equipped at base trim, and great fun to drive. With an 800 dollar upgrade gets 180hp/190lb-ft torque without touching the turbo. The torque comes in super low even in stock trim. I quite love my Cruze.

Only thing wrong with GM is lately they are hell bent on slapping Camaro style tailights on all their vehicles. Yuck

Well, and that huge gold bowtie.

I must say, I kind of like it. The front could use some adjustment, but the rest of the car is kind of cool.

I'm holding out until the azteks are sub-$1000. Then I'll try something silly like stuffing LS6 into it. GRMers have talked about doing it, but I'm enough of an idiot to actually try. I just need to wait until this project falls to challenge prices.

I know it's an old concept, but how did this thing ever get off someones sketchpad?

In reply to Gearheadotaku:

The older I get, the more I realize that people just see things differently than other people. I know that sounds obvious, but as time goes on I see more reasons for it. One of many examples is that I have a thing for gold cars. I used to not know why. But then I started thinking about it, and realized my first Hot Wheel was gold, then there was Jim Rockford's Firebird, Ponch's Trans Am on Chips, both of which also made me a fan of 70's Firebirds. And my first Firebird had a gold stripe on the side.
I love the smell of cigars. Not because they smell good, but because the smell reminds me of my Grandfather.
Kids like the edgy, weird looking (to me) body kits on their cars. Why? I don't know, maybe transformers, or the style of cartoons when they were growing up.
Anyways, my point is that everyone has tastes and preferences that are a result of their background, so it should be no surprise that the designs of cars differ.
The thing I don't get is that there are certain automotive design elements that virtually everyone agrees are beautiful. So when I see a vehicle like this one, I have to ask myself why someone would stray so far from what most people think is beautiful. I guess its to gauge reaction, and in some cases it must pay off, like with the Nissan Juke. I think that thing is butt ugly, all out of proportion, and looks basically comical. Some people must like it, because they sell. To each his own, and for a good reason, I suppose.

So what's Nissan's excuse? most of their current product line makes that car look like the Siata displayed at NYC's MOMA.
