Wife's driving the 2011 Sorento with the 2.4. Sees the check engine light on so asks me what's wrong. Long story short, got a P200A DTM. Took it to the dealer, says its the VCM actuator and tells me it's not covered under the powertrain warranty. Offers to fix for just under 500, i say thanks but no thanks cause they gave me a part number 28323-2G300 and for $500 with access to a service manual i can screw it up just as badly as they will. Browse the forums and see this is a common problem with the 2.4 Theta, and find a few parts outlets with the part I need for around $200. Then I see some Hyundai parts outlets come up in my online search, they show the same part # for about $100-120 some 80 to 100 bucks less. So, TLDR, do Kia and Hyundai parts numbers match like the old GM stuff did (does). Paging Bobzilla to the white courtesy phone

Any chance it's covered under the emissions warranty?
I haven't checked the list, but there are many components and systems covered for 80k to 150k depending on the component, engine model (pzev, ulev, etc), and where you live.
Might be worth a look.
In my experience, if you order the same number from Hyundai, it will show up in a package that has both Hyundai and Kia trademarks.

That's good to know. I actually have grown to like the Sorento. Good power, decent room and relatively economical with the 2.4. Wife got a new job with a 140 mile round trip commute 2 to 3 times a week so I will more than likely be out of my powertrain warranty pretty soon. And, there are a couple of parts that have been on backorder (ABS wheel sensor, Air bag sensor) that i would like to pick up and replace on my own eventually.

The brake made thing made me think of VWs. At least until the mid 2000s, there was ONE form factor for VW rear brake pads. I don't know if VW had a million part numbers, but the parts suppliers generally had two: Audi A8 and everything else. The A8 had a different compound.
I use the A8 rear pads
I saw it go the other way once. Toyota Corolla and Chevy Prizm, same car, same factory, different air filter. Different SIZE. The Chevy is 1/2" smaller in one direction and 1/2" larger in the other. Why? I have absoberkly no idea.
