Sounds like your Gramps was a great guy.
No cleaning related, but My best friend's little cousin noticed that his mom's brakes were squealing...
so he sprayed them with WD-40!

I did that once as a kid. Stopped as soon as I put a nice big scrape along the ridge of the hood on my moms minivan. Lesson learned.
