The button on the key to unlock the doors had it's rubber cover break.
So far so good in a little over 2000 miles in a month and a week in the saddle of my Disco.
I do need to replace the tierods. I have tracked the tramlining to the fact I can turn the wheel a couple of inches before it begins to engage the wheels in changing direction
I think that was the first thing to go on my dad's too
The next was the cooling system and engine block in quick succession
The smarmy answer I had to the title was, "The purchase!"

I thought you bought this weekend......said the guy with a Bronco 2....
Don't bother trying to put tie rod ends on it, replace the entire assembly end to end. Keys are a fortune. If you can live without the remote locking feature, a good locksmith can cut down a series 1 Disco key to fit.

Ah, this. My sister and brother in law lived without remote locking after the 3rd time it quit. My Jeep seems to eat remote batteries too.
the remote locking and unlocking still works. Just the rubber button over the switch broke. I see repair kits on ebay for less than 10.. so I might give those a try
Lotus uses Cobra brand alarm systems. You can buy the remotes on eBay, especially eBay UK, and then "train" your car to the remote. Dunno nothing about Discos.

I am surprised it took this long for anything to go wrong.....and I like disco II's
Always remember: When a Discovery is leaking oil, all it's doing is marking its territory.
I thought it was: if it's not leaking oil, don't start it.... it's probably running low.
My girlfriend's dad recently got one of these, and I had a chance to drive it this weekend for the first time.
WTF is up with the key angle? I don't know if I am just a whiner, but that was the first thing I decided I didn't like!
If you look at the ignition cylinder from the pass side, a normal car turns from 10 oclock to 11 oclock for accessory, and maybe 10 oclock to 1 to start then back to 12.
The land rover felt like it starts at 1 and turns to 4 to start.
Also, the steering wheel was a strange shape and while not bad, it was really different than anything else I've driven.
Handles better than my Montero though
the steering wheel is a -very- odd shape. I don;t notice it anymore though. And yes, for 5000 pounds, it handles surprisingly well
