Slept in, missed the start and the incident. Learned of Simonsen's passing on Speed FB page... never, ever expected that given the safety of todays cars. Casts a dark cloud over the entire event. RIP.

This, I knew it was very bad when they wouldn't show a replay, and the general lack of news. The replay from the corvette just showed the car veer left into the wall.
RIP Allan!
The way the Aston veered sharp left was there contact or mechanical failure? Youtube videos don't show much clearly.

No contact; it looked like he over-corrected when the left-side tires went off the track and the car snapped to the left when traction was gained. The race just isn't very entertaining anymore.
RIP, Mr. Simonsen.
The family requested AMR to continue. Hopefully they can get a win, although that would be bittersweet.

Number 1 Audi is still in the garage getting worked on. "Generator" issues.
Looks like a hell of a hit, straight in. There are reports that he shoved the armco into one of the trees over there.

some of the live coverage (as they finished replacing the armco) you could see where the bark had been ripped off a large tree just inches outside the barrier

Yeah, that's a bad place to go off. I was relieved to see the guy climb out of that one.
On the bright side Audi is still leading, but they're not running away with it like I'd prefer.
GTE Pro is getting pretty tight too.
In reply to LainfordExpress: I actually root for whatever team is facing Audi. Both toyotas were on the lead lap again when I stopped the DVR so I don't have to sit through the commercials. Next year might be tricky though, with porsche coming to lmp1

Yeah, I'll be all over Porsche. It is a personal anti-Toyota thing.
In other news, far be it from me to criticize those that defend our country, but they keep showing the Marine Corps advertisement/recruiting montage commercial. And you got your Marines conducting what appears to be a rather coordinated beach landing assault on what looks like a particularly anti-American cloud of smoke... then, there are two cut-scenes, one of a truck and another of the cargo hold of plane. And they're carrying these cardboard boxes with American flags on them labeled generically "AID". And we're back to invading the E36 M3 out of that smoke.
So, what? This is the like the most brutal delivery of aid ever? I don't get it.

I can't wait for Porsche to come back. I was a P fan during the Group C era (and never imagined my own marque would ever try it, at the time). I'll still cheer for Audi, though. I've said all along that my guys would never get the credit they deserve because Porsche "retired" while they were on top. Now we have the chance to find out. As long as Joest doesn't sell the cars and renew their relationship with Porsche, of course.
Edit for clarity. Extra word where it didn't belong.

We're 1/4 way through, I'll watch the highlights in the morning.
