Without scanning, where would you suggest I start looking until I can get to a scanner?

I know sensors under bumper so I'd check wiring/plugs. I've read that under-seat wiring getting chaffed/cut can affect it as well.

Anything else I can check in the meantime? Steering wheel clock spring?

Or should I just get it scanned? And who can scan the airbag light? Autozone? Pep Boys? My local garage?

Unfortunately scanning the SRS (supplemental restraint system) usually means a trip to the dealership unless you can find a shop with a high end scanner.

The problem is probably in the wiring somewhere and will difficult to pin down without at least a FSM. My Transit Connect had 3 different sensors and associated connections just in the driver's seat!

You mentioned the first suspects, checking the impact sensors for damage from corrosion/ wiring issues, and then under the seats for stretched wires or connectors. If you don't find anything there, its time to pull the codes. When did Chevy (have they?) start using weight sensors on the front seats? I know in Toyota/ Lexus vehicles, (starting around 2004??) those could loose their calibration, and set a air bag light as well. At any rate, inspect the easy stuff, then pull the codes.
