Changing my answer to "$200 and get it if you like the car as a project".
Is that dash machine turned? Also, those gauges are cool, especially the far left gauge.
Is that a PA to the left of the column?
What a cool car!
Coworker confirmed it is a 72, and she is going to find out if her dad is the original owner. She knows that he bought it in the 70s but not sure when.
It's a 72 AMX/Javelin. The hood, dash and spoiler confirm is--the tail lights are 72 only. It is missing the correct grille. It will be a V8...304/360/401. 72 was the first year for the Torquefilight automatics (same as Mopar). 304s got the 904, and 360/401 got the 727.
If it's not completely Swiss cheese, you need to buy this for less than $2,000 and bring it to the challenge.
Yup, that's a legit 1972 Javelin AMX. Those taillights are worth $500. The gauge cluster has the tach and Go Pack gauges, also $$$, and it's a factory A/C car.
Even if it's a 304 car it's worth getting for parts alone. It doesn't look like any body panels are rusted yet, so it could totally be worth putting together.
Hell, I'd buy it from you!
In reply to Strizzo :
They're missing the body line crease down the center of the sides of the car. Those aren't Javelin body panels at all.

So then the million dollar question: what is a fair price for both of us, given the potential risk of Fred flintstone floors?

They are lower quarter patch panels for the 2nd gen Javelin/AMX
You can see the crease in this photo...

I would raise to about $800-1000 from my previous, as I assumed the Texas body would be pretty solid in my previous bid.
Of course, it is low, but you are also saving the seller the trouble of cleaning it up, listing it, and dealing with all the other lowballers.
Thanks. I’ll see what they think they’re going to get for it and go from there. Definitely want to try to keep it from going to the scrapper.
Keep in mind, the longer you wait, the more people are going to tell her it is worth Crazy Money (It isn't) and you are trying to rip her off (you aren't). Usually in this situation, I try to get there myself and make an offer before they become too heavily invested in selling it, and too emotionally attached.
i approach friends with:
"here's what it's worth. i'd like to get it for ____ less than that. In exchange for that _____ lower price, you don't have to eff around with the mouth-breathing sister-berkeleyers on CL."
“I’m here now, you know me, i’m not some random Craigslist stranger. this is my offer that i believe is fair for both of us based on the condition, i can have it towed/gone in x time”

the ladder, and it’s in the middle of the hood because when it was windy 10 years ago it ripped the corner of the hood off?

The dad has had the car for 40 years, a couple weeks more isn’t going to change what he thinks it’s worth. In other news, he also has a corolla, 60s vw bus, 70-something Lincoln mkiv or mkv, and a couple 80s stand up jet skis.
She said he won’t sell the bus though. She’s going to talk to him tomorrow and hopefully get the vin and find out if there were any previous owners.
As an update: Still working on getting over to see the car, but i'm the only person she's discussing it with. at this point i'm pretty certain it doesn't have a 401 in it unless it was swapped in, as the 401 would have had a fender badge in 72. hoping it has a 360 and i can clean it up a bit and have some fun with it before moving it on. turns out there is actually a fairly active AMC club here in Houston.

I had emailed back and forth a few times with the guy from "Planet Houston" about some stuff for my wagon before I realized how far gone it was. (I'm up near College Station.)
I'm a little anxious to see how my Japanese powered "American" gets received when it's done. LOL
